At the start of Childs's soothing 10th Tea Shop mystery (after 2008's The Silver Needle Murder), Indigo Tea Shop proprietor Theodosia Browning and her horse, Captain Harley, encounter murder most unsavory during the annual Charleston Point-to-Point Race. Shortly after clearing a jump, they're spooked by encountering the corpse of Abby Davis, an evening TV news anchor, who's been shot through the forehead. In parallel with CPD Det. Burt Tidwell, Theodosia pursues her own investigation, prompted by attorney Jory Davis, the victim's brother and Theodosia's ex-boyfriend. Prime suspects include anchorman Webster Hall, who lost his job to Abby, and Abby's husband, who may have known she was having an affair. As usual, Childs's plot simmers slowly while Theodosia's dogged yet always elegant sleuthing is as satisfying as sipping a cup of jade oolong. (Mar.)

    too much of the same

    I have adored these books in the past...they are well written, descriptive and contain characters one can really get to know. However, after reading all of these books, I am really hoping the author will now change up her "formula" a bit in the crime part. Her formula consists of characters in the tea shop doing their daily thing; a citizen gets murdered..the tea shop owner gets involved, sets up suspicion for several people and then the "least suspected person" actually kills the person...except, one always figures out way ahead "whodunit" and, there is a ridiculous scene in EVERY book...basically the same..at the end, the shop owner chases the criminal, going off alone, getting beaten, buried, or almost murdered just to be rescued in time. I now skip all that stuff..same scene, different place...and I wonder why in the world, the author keeps having the tea owner run off alone in the dark chasing criminals OVER AND OVER...this character sure doesn't "learn from experience"..since we are dealing with the same characters in every book doing the same things, we already KNOW what is going to happen in every single book......it is easy to figure out who the killer is, because the set up is the same every time. I now find I don't really read these for the mystery part, but for just the fun of the tea shop and Charleston. The mystery part is so "stock", that it just gets in the way now...always the SAME. I may have read my last one, unless there is some kind of surprise or intrigue or development of the characters.. they are boring now...and, that makes me VERY SAD !!!!

    Another good one

    This latest addition to the Tea Shop Series is just as good as the previous 9. I really love them all, and like the recipes in the back of the book, too. These are fun, what I call brain candy!!

    TEA SHOP MYSTERIES

    I HAVE READ ALL OF LAURA CHILD'S TEA SHOP MYSTERIES. EACH ONE LEAVES ME WITH THE DESIRE TO READ THE NEXT ONE. I CAN HARDLY WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT ONE COMES OUT. SHE IS A FANTASTIC WRITER. BUT I DO WISH THEY WOULD ALSO COME IN PAPERBACK WHERE THEY WOULD BE LESS EXPENSIVE AND MY SIZES WOULD BE UNIFORM. I LIKE MY BOOK SERIES TO BE THE SAME SIZE. BUT I DO NOT HAVE ANY COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE BOOK ITSELF. I AM AWAITING # 11. I ALSO LIKE HER SCRAPBOOKING SERIES.

    fans will relish drinking tea with Theo as she tries to solve the homicide of someone she disliked

    The proprietor of the Charleston Tea Shop Theodosia Browning is having a great time competing in the Charleston Point-to-Point Race. All of a sudden her horse becomes riled and out of control. Theodosia Browning leaps off and does a controlled roll limiting her injuries. However, her sudden landing leads to the discovery of the body of TV reporter Abby Davis with a bullet wound in the victim¿s forehead.<BR/><BR/>The last time they met, Abby tried to bait Theo into a cat fight, but the storeowner refused to be play Abby¿s game. Detective Burt Tidewell shocks Theo, who has solved several homicides, when he tells her to investigate. Her former boyfriend, Abby¿s brother Jory, is back from New York and also asks Theo to make inquiries. When she goes to the old plantation what Abby and her husband Drew donated to a historical trust corporation, she finds the remains of a bride who vanished a hundred years ago. In the present she learns that several people benefited from Abby¿s death as the reporter made many enemies on her climb to the top.<BR/><BR/>Putting aside the coincidence of another corpse in Theo¿ path and the cop encouraging her to investigate, this is another delightful amateur sleuth in which readers obtain a taste of the South. The heroine is an easy going person but her demeanor hides her steel spine and independent heart. Theo does what she belies is right even when it may harm a relationship she cherishes. Besides a wonderful look at Charleston and surrounding Low Country, fans will relish drinking tea with Theo as she tries to solve the homicide of someone she disliked.<BR/><BR/>Harriet Klausner

    Perfect Beach Reading

    Purchased this book to read on the beach and it's like the Harlequin of mystery books - you can fall asleep, drop the book, pick it back up and know what's going on. I've read every one of the Tea Shop books and while they might not be "literature", they can be entertaining. Word of caution: don't read while hungry! The recipes are almost worth the price of the book!

    Theodosia Browning at her best

    No matter how many Tea Shop Mysteries I read, they just keep getting better and better. I love Theodosia and her able employees, Drayton and Haley. Everyone just seems to fit in so well. The idea of the Masked Ball was so "southern." Laura Childs themes are so realistic as far as visualizing the old south. Every time I read one of her books, I look forward to the next one.

    You would think after ten books, there would be no victims left in Charleston, but Laura Childs makes the story believable and captures your interest right from the start. I love the tea shop and all the people who work there. What a great place to spend the afternoon. Looking forward to the next story.

    Good Tea, But not Brewed "Ooo-long" Enough

    I like Laura Childs' Tea Shop Mysteries, and this one did not really disappoint, so much as it needed a tad more character development...like a pot of good tea that needed to brew a little longer. Ex-boyfriend Jory's sister is the body Theodosia's horse trips over, in this latest escapade, and Jory asks her to look into it, much to the objection of present boyfriend Parker. But the interaction between these characters is tepid, and it's hard to care about either of these guys. The relationship between Theo and her Tea Shop buddies, as well as the portly Det. Tidwell, is much more real and thus the reader can actually care for these folks. This is a cozy, rainy day book to read...with a great cup of tea and a muffin, of course, and as always, the reader is treated to littl tid-bits about historic Charleston, SC, and interesting facts about tea. Also, there is another historic mystery tied in with this one about a bride who went missing more that eight decades ago. Theo does run headlong into trouble, as usual, which one would expect if one has read any of the other Tea Shop Mysteries. This is not a book for those looking for thrills and chills, although there is a bit of danger (due to the aforementioned pinchant Theo has for running headlong into trouble). It is for those looking for something fun to read to escape the rigors of day-to-day life. Be prepared by having tea on hand. You'll be wanting a cuppa very soon.

    Loved it!

    I have thoroughly enjoyed all of the books in this series. Each one always has a really funny part and the whodunit aspect throughout usually keeps me guessing until the end. Love this author.
