Overview

This book is made up of situations I've experienced while taking care of my father and at the nursing home. The examples are meant to help caregivers understand why their loved ones act like they do and solutions for different problems. This book is being used by caregivers in the home, after loved ones are admitted to the nursing home, to train CNAs,for education at nursing home inservices,as an ice breaker and for education at support group meetings, by high school classes before clinicals in the nursing home, and recommended by home health for their clients. My experience to write this book came from 10 years helping my mother take care of my father, 15 1/2 years working in long term care and 8 years as facilitator for a support group. I've given speeches for the Alzheimer's Association since 1998 including inservices for the nursing home I worked at and been awarded the 2004 Iowa CNA of the year award by the Iowa Health Care Association and in 2006 Professional Caregiver by the Alzheimer's Association. Open A Window caught the attention of author and speaker Jolene Brackey. She asked to used two of my stories in her latest bok "Creating Moments Of Joy" and gave me this review to use on the cover of my book. "This book shares what is possible if we allow a person with Alzheimer's to "be" who they are right now. Thank you for "opening" a window.

Editorial Reviews

C. Wright
This caregiver has taken the care to detail a number of real life interactions she experienced while caregiving her own father and patients at the nursing home. She's won awards for her caregiving efforts, actually. Lots of examples, simple stories told with heart. Will help anyone caring for people with memory problems.

Meet the Author

Fay Risner saw the need to be better educated about Alzheimer's so that she could help her father stay at home as long as possible. In the early 1990's, not much was printed about the disease so Fay went to work at the local nursing home and found her niche. She was able to help her father as well as many residents and their families.Fay asked for an educational CNA session at the annual Alzheimer's conference and was the first speaker. She started activites at the nursing home for people in the late stages of Alzheimers and involved the CNAs which lead to better interaction between the staff and residents. Because of a father and a job she loved Fay has written a book to educate and help caregivers of all kinds to take better care of people with Alzheimer's.
