Expand Your Mind through Understandable and Relatable Poetry

When I read Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon's work, I am mesmerized by the striking imagery she creates. Her poems paint delicious pictures that I feel I could sit chewing on for a while, extracting additional meaning with each bite.
I really enjoy the interesting contrasting imagery of her poem, "Bop: The North Star." In this piece she contrasts the slavery Harriet Tubman escaped to those currently imprisoned in an Auburn penitentiary. She contrasts color as she describes a girl wearing a black necklace with the silhouette of a white woman on it. She uses the stars, perhaps, to giver her poem a sense of direction because people often use the stars as a guide; however, she flips our normalized metaphor of the stars as a guide by repetitively musing that the stars needed Harriet Tubman's eyes. Thus, in a sense, she makes Harriet Tubman a guiding star, and she often calls to Harriet through this piece. I could read and re-read this piece and extract new meaning each time. This is what I love about Lyrae's poetry. It is masterfully complex, yet not too dense to understand.
Another piece I really enjoyed was "Buffet Dream." For this piece, she successfully executes the Sesstina form. I am amazed at her ability to use repetition of images for emphasis. Though she uses frequent repetition, each time an image reoccurs it appears in a different angle, so to speak, giving further depth to her ideas. Mouths, Hunger, Sweetness, Taste, Saltiness, Dreams, being a young girl, Sky Diving, swallowing, bodies of water - all of these images become more then just words. As they repeat, they gain significance and meaning. She compares hunger for life and desire to dreams of eating delicious pastries while juxtaposing a few memories from her own life. She uses hyberbole to broaden her images but at the same time, the tiny details of the poem keep it from becoming abstract.
Lyrae's carefully crafted poems inspire and instruct me how to be a better writer. I can relate to her works, and I find her complexity meaningful and intriguing. I recommend her poetry collection to anyone looking to expand their minds!

    Unlike anything you've ever read.

I was actually fortunate enough to hear Lyrae read some of her poems in a class of mine a few months back. Her style is quite different from those of other poets that I've read, but I really like it. She has a unique way of using punctuation, and for me, it serves as a yellow light, to get my reading eyes to slow down and try to soak up the meaning from every last word.

My favorite poem was the "Buffet Dream" just because she's talking about a relatively universal topic, reoccurring dreams that by chance are shared by different people. However, she talks about desiring things that seem so close yet just barely out of reach, never quite stilling that hungry stomach from growling.

You do have to read each line carefully; they're short but each word is really deep. It's so thick and dense with meaning yet with re-reading the poetry you can peel away the layers and get difference insights on the topic or merely work deeper and deeper rather than skimming the words and finding it challenging to read because the meaning just doesn't come out and punch you in the face.

Lyrae is an excellent poetess who brings a slew of seemingly unrelated topics together that makes sense. If you can't see how astronomy, sky-diving, dreams, math, art, and feminism can somehow mix and fit, you have to read ]Open Interval[ for yourself and see how she works her magic.
