Overview

Following on the very hot heels of Pick Me Up, Do Not Open, and Take Me Back, comes Open Me Up, and irreverent, graphically dynamic, intelligently hilarious, and gruesomely informative book about the goings on of our innards.

A spectacular 3-D cover (featuring an incredible die cut to reveal the internal organs) will wow browsers, while the superb interior design, imagery, and information will seal the deal. Learn about the discovery of penicillin from a graphic novel, see how the heart works via its social networking page, and watch white blood cells zap invaders on a video-game spread.

This is not your father's Gray's Anatomy.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Lynn Evarts
In two-page spreads, this book tackles everything one needs to know about how the human body works. Each topic is tackled with many illustrations and small fact boxes that discuss everything from the pathogens with which the body deals to the four people best known for discovering DNA. One chapter moves from the outside in, beginning with the skin and the impact of body decoration to your genetic ID and cell division. In a style expected from this publisher, the book is a wonder to look at. Each page pops with color and illustrations, making it the perfect place for a reluctant researcher to begin. It would also be a great browsing book for the student who cannot find anything to do because the visuals and the brief text will lure even the most reluctant reader. This book could be used as an entry point for a classroom lesson just as easily. It covers everything, from the outside in. Reviewer: Lynn Evarts
Publishers Weekly
Appropriately, the die-cut cover of this unflinching guide to the human body, in the vein of graphic reference guides Pick Me Up and Do Not Open, reveals human organs. Inside, each of the eightcomprehensive sections discusses a different aspect of the body, from “Being Human,” which depicts human evolution as a track race (“Best of luck Sapien!” reads a sign in the crowd), to “Malfunctions and Medicine,” about diseases and cures, and “Life Story,” exploring puberty and reproduction. The juxtaposition of photographs, humor (the autonomic nervous system is envisioned in comic book panels as a rescue team within a boy's body), historical narratives and a variety of artwork should generate hours of gratifying discovery. Ages 10–up. (Oct.)
