Open Mind

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Greg Prato

But the gentleman whom he replaced, Glen Matlock, was a different story entirely -- he was supposedly a main songwriting force in the band. Over the years, he's appeared as a "hired gun" for others Iggy Pop, Johnny Thunders, the Damned, Ian Hunter, etc. and has also issued sporadic solo albums, such as 2000's Open Mind. A famous old tale goes that Matlock was thrown out of the Pistols for liking the Beatles, and while one may never truly get to the bottom of that, Matlock definitely is not ashamed to incorporate his appreciation of melody ...

A famous old tale goes that Matlock was thrown out of the Pistols for liking the Beatles, and while one may never truly get to the bottom of that, Matlock definitely is not ashamed to incorporate his appreciation of melody throughout Open Mind -- especially on "Regular Ray of Sunshine" and "Gimme Gimme Gimme." But Matlock whose voice sounds like a cross between Keith Richards and Bob Dylan is certainly not shy of utilizing one of the Pistols' fortes -- three-chord rockers -- as evidenced by such selections as the album-opening title track. Additionally, there's even a few surprises, such as the organ-led Animals tribute, "Ambition." Although some die-hard Never Mind the Bollocks fanatics may complain that Open Mind is a bit too "classic rock sounding" for their tastes, Matlock rewriting "Anarchy in the U.K." at this stage of his life would sound a bit silly, wouldn't it?
