Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Major's fine first novel features Joe Gunther, a police lieutenant in Brattleboro, Vt., who is as likable and sensitive a hero as Robert B. Parker's Spenser, but who possesses a freshly intelligent voice all his own. A wealthy young man seeking his stolen dog is killed by a frightened widow who has been set up expect an intruder; a young woman is assaulted by a ski-masked man with a false tattoo. Gunther connects the victims to their service as jurors on a trial three years before, in which a Vietnam veteran was quickly convicted of murdering a young woman. Pressured not to stir old fires by police and political figures alike, Gunther is determined to pursue the case when an attempt is made on his own life by the man in the ski mask. Doggedly, Gunther persists in his investigations even after the police chief, his best friend, is killed in a car accident that Gunther himself barely survives. Set in the dead of Vermont winter, this atmospheric procedural has some fascinating sections on forensic medicine. Its chilling climax in a snow storm is followed by a satisfying wrap-up in which the true identities of the original murder victim, her murderer and man with the ski mask are revealed and their connections explained. Mysterious Book Club alternate. (September)

A distinctly American murder mystery, with a tough-guy detective hero, slatherings of blood and violence and dollops of kinky sex. Mayor [..] lavishes loving description on its geography, weather, buildings and character. ''Open Season'' whips the reader along at a lively pace [...] well crafted and engrossing, "Open Season" is a very promising beginning for a series of Vermont mysteries.
Charles Champlin
Open Season is another ingeniously plotted thriller. A series of very clever murders is directed at the jurors who convicted an itinerant black man of the murder of a young woman. The setting is Brattleboro, Vt., not previously a hotbed of crime fiction. Lt. Joe Gunther quickly decides the jailed man is innocent, which does not explain the crime wave. Gunther himself becomes a target, and the suspense is somehow more engrossing for arising in a setting that is both unhackneyed and well evoked.

I fell in love with Joe Gunther and his band of intrepid Vermont cops a couple of years ago. The people are very real, the police procedure is very real, and the Vermont locales are fantastic. The plots hang together and are varied enough to keep your interest -- never a dull moment. This is another series that reads best in order, but I started with one of the later ones and then went back to catch up. I will reread with pleasure!

I enjoyed this mystery set in Brattleboro, Vermont, a town I used to live in! It was fun to recognize all the street names and places!

Really enjoyed the main characters. Good introduction to series. A little far fetched but the story pulls you in and keeps you guessing. Liked the fact that even the "good guys" made mistakes.

Well written from someone who knows what he is talking about - because that was his job. Believable and realistic - what else can you ask for. I'm reading the whole series. Plus it's a bargain on the Nook. A friend lent us a later book to read and now we are hooked on his books. I don't think you will be disappointed with it.
