Overview

OPEN SECRETS grew out of a practical need to understand the human trafficking and witchcraft encountered during Cois Tine’s work with immigrants in Ireland. It provides a clear description of human trafficking, its causes, processes, effects, and of the violence and greed that lie at its heart.

Witchcraft is examined from the perspective of its history and its different manifestations in Europe and Africa. During the colonial era and into modern times, these manifestations have intermingled and influenced each other and now, in modern Ireland, they meet again in the violence of human trafficking. OPEN SECRETS is a must read for all who seek to gain an understanding of these issues.

Meet the Author

Jennifer DeWan has a Ph.D. in Anthropology from Columbia University in the City of New York. She conducted her doctoral research on women’s groups and political activism in relation to globalisation and social change in Ireland. Since completing her dissertation, she has moved back to Cork, the city where she conducted the bulk of her doctoral research, and now works as a research consultant, writer, lecturer, and political activist. Her main interests are in the areas of gender equality, social justice, immigration and integration, globalisation and modernity, culture and society, and public policy. Although this is a new area of research for Dr. DeWan, she has always been interested in witchcraft and particularly how it manifests in the contemporary moment, and she is looking forward to conducting more extensive research in the area of witchcraft, immigration and integration in Ireland.

David Lohan is a native of Galway, residing in Cork. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering, as well as post-graduate qualifications from the National University of Ireland at Galway and Cork. He has worked in the private sector for over 15 years, five of which were given to running his own company in Edinburgh. He is presently working as a volunteer for Cork-based charity Cois Tine and is pursuing further postgraduate studies. He will complete his studies for a Master’s in Politics in 2012. His work at Cois Tine has given him the opportunity to combine his interest in justice, community, politics and history. He campaigns on the issue of human trafficking, an issue about which he is passionate.
