document, rather than the application used to create it, the central focus of the user's experience. OpenDoc Programmer's Guide is the definitive treatment for creating OpenDoc software for the Mac OS platform. The book describes the component software revolution and explains how you can develop for it. The book contains three parts:

  • Part 1 is an overview of OpenDoc development. It explains what parts and part editors are, how embedding works, and how you should approach your development project.

  • Part 2 describes OpenDoc programming in detail. It includes chapters on embedding, drawing, menus, windows, data storage, data transfer, linking, scripting, and other topics. It also describes how to customize and extend the capabilities of OpenDoc.

  • Part 3 provides guidelines for making sure that your part editor and its parts present the correct interface to your users.

OpenDoc Programmer's Guide also includes appendices with checklists to speed your programming efforts and an extensive glossary of OpenDoc terms.

The accompanying CD-ROM contains the complete reference to the OpenDoc programming interface in both QuickView and Acrobat formats. QuickView provides extensive hypertext links and fast full-text search. Acrobat provides the reference in page format for onscreen viewing and printing. The CD-ROM also includes extensive sample source code and programming "recipes" from the OpenDoc development team.
