As interest in opera grows, the number of performing companies and houses has increased throughout the U.S. Fledgling companies in small cities and established giants in major metropolitan areas are among the more than 90 opera houses and companies profiled here The work is arranged by state, city, and company name. Entries include a brief history of opera in the city, with information on the inaugural performance; company staff and its repertory with a list of world or American premieres; and practical information on obtaining tickets and suggestions for lodging in the city. The length of entries varies with the size and age of the company. Opera Roanoke, which began in 1976, is covered in a page, while the New Orleans Opera, which can trace its roots to the eighteenth century, has a longer entry. Illustrations of the interior or exterior of the opera house complement many of the entries. The index lists the titles of major operas, composers, and artistic directors, as well as the companies themselves. A bibliography completes the volume This work is useful in that it highlights many small opera companies. "Opera Companies of the World" [RBB My 1 92] covers many of the same companies, especially those in major cities, but includes companies in other parts of the world as well. For many collections, that work may be sufficient. For libraries with a strong emphasis on opera, "Opera Companies and Houses of the United States" will supplement existing works by providing information on little-known American companies.
