Overview

JUDY GARLAND’S wry, ironic voice has been vividly captured by author JOHN MEYER in Operation Ruby Slipper, a World War II adventure which casts the twenty-one year old singer as an undercover agent behind German lines in 1943. Judy is recruited to go on a secret mission to find a reclusive Nazi physicist, Franz Kintner, who is developing a nuclear-powered battery for Hitler’s U-boats. All Judy has to do is get his picture --- with the camera that’s concealed in the heel of her shoe. Once he’s identified, the Allies can take him out.

Why Judy? She seems an unlikely choice for a spy. But the American Office of Strategic Services has unearthed a fan letter Kintner wrote MGM, asking for Judy’s picture. They’re certain he’ll surface if Judy is the bait.

About the Author

John Meyer launched his career as a songwriter in the 1960s writing comedy lyrics for Joan Rivers, Linda Lavin and Lily Tomlin. His song, I’d Like to Hate Myself in the Morning, was sung by Judy Garland in her last American TV appearance, along with three other Meyer pieces. His experience with Judy led to Meyer’s bestselling 1983 memoir, Heartbreaker (Doubleday) that was republished in 2006 by Citadel, with a never-before-released rehearsal recording attached. The book describes his attempt to rescue the doomed star from the demons of addiction that took her life in 1969.

Meyer went on to work for Steven Spielberg on the TV series The Amazing Stories, writing both script and songs for the episode
Gershwin’s Trunk. He also produced his own film-noir musical pastiche, The Betrayal of Nora Blake, at London’s prestigious Jermyn St. Theatre. Singer/actress Eartha Kitt did a reading of Meyer’s upcoming stage thriller, Zazou, while his tunes continue to be released by Linda Eder, Paula West and Margaret Whiting. His CD, Bringing Out the Beast, is available at CDBaby.com/beast.

Meyer enjoys drinking Burgundy, both red and white. He lives in Manhattan with his wife, Suzanne. Please visit meyerwire.wordpress.com.
