CHAPTER 1

Carnal Ridge, North Carolina

"I would lick that man up one side and down the other."

Detective Val Calhoun tightened her grip on the pen and prayed for patience with her coworker. Not that these types of comments were anything new. If it wasn't Raquel making some sort of off-color remark about the supposed living god who frequented SPAC — the Shifter Protection and Concealment side of the Carnal Ridge police station — it was Nancy, or Jean, or Tammy ...

Women really could be just as bad as men.

"I'd pay good money to see that man out of uniform," Raquel continued. "I bet his abs are to die for." She snapped her fingers. "What are the chances we could get a calendar made for charity? One with him as January through December. I'd bet we'd make a killing at it."

No doubt they would. It wasn't just the women at the PD who had fallen under Officer Britton Townsend's spell, it was the entire Carnal Ridge female population. It was sickening to watch.

Either way, Raquel's comments meant only one thing. He'd walked into the department and ogle-the-hottie time had commenced. Val would just have to suffer through it until he left.

"January would be nothing but snow and him in a scarf ... Oh! And the summer! Girl, we'd get him under an outside shower on a sandy beach, water running down his body, hair slicked to his head." Raquel fanned herself. "Is it getting hot in here?"

"Just for you." And every other female ...

Raquel shot a perturbed look at Val. "There is something seriously wrong with you."

"Why? Because I don't share in the let's-lust-after-Officer-Townsend fun time?"

Raquel's plump lips pursed. "Mmm-hmm. You keep telling yourself that."

"What's that supposed to mean?"

But she'd already lost Raquel's attention as the half-shifter stared off to the other side of the department again and made an appreciative whew noise. "Damn. I'd like thirty minutes alone with that man."

"You can do better than him," Val muttered. She finished writing her notes, closed the file, then tossed it onto the growing stack sitting on the corner of her desk, refusing to glance in the direction that had Raquel so riveted.

"Oh, definitely. He's not the introduce-to-my-daddy type. He's the give-me a-rockin'-good-time-in-bed type." She sighed. "Those eyes. Have you seen anything like them?"

Unfortunately, no. Britton's dark looks, cocky attitude, and electric blue eyes were what made all the women's knees turn to mush. That, and his tight ass. The ultimate bad-boy persona. With the leather jacket to boot. And he played it up. With every woman he came into contact with.

Except her. Thank the Dea.

"It's like that gaze strips you naked every time he looks at you," Raquel said as she tucked a strand of auburn hair behind her ear and bit her lower lip.

Val made a blecking sound, and went to work on the next file that needed her attention.

"You look ravishing today, Raquel," a deep masculine voice purred. Val could just picture the tilted smirk on his face that made the women's ovaries scream.

Officer Townsend.

Britton.

Brit to the ones completely gaga over the blue-eyed devil.

Thankfully Val had been cured of such an idiotic notion long ago.

A giggle came from Raquel. A. Giggle. Val had to keep from snorting.

"You're looking mighty fine today too, Brit."

Gag me.

The desk wobbled, causing Val's pen to scribble a line across the paper. She ground her teeth, but didn't bother looking up. "Get off my desk, Townsend."

"You really could take some wardrobe lessons from Raquel here, Princess."

Taking a deep breath, she lifted her head, hating that her heart had the same reaction as every other woman he encountered — it fluttered. Every damn time she had the misfortune of crossing his path.

Pushing away the sensation, she met and held those mesmerizing ice-blue eyes made all the brighter by his olive complexion and jet-black hair and brows. His eyelashes were way too long for a man and only magnified the color of the irises.

All those good looks wasted on a douche bag.

She lifted her brow, going for bored as she tried not to notice how well he filled out his uniform.

"You're the last person I dress to impress, Townsend."

"Obviously. But one would think you'd put in a little more effort for some of the other men."

His put-down, as always, was her cure. Reminded her what a deplorable jerk he could be. Thank the Dea for that, or she'd be like all of the other vagis in this place — wet and throbbing.

Leaning her elbows on her desk, she cocked her head. "Think what you want, but I'm the one sitting behind this desk. Not you."

Her comment had the intended effect. Anger tightened his normally smirky lips as his jaw clenched.

She suppressed a smile. You want a fight. I'll give you a fight.

"At least we know you didn't sleep your way to the top."

"Nope. Just took the job from an incompetent jerk."

Raquel gave a little squeak of horror. "Jeez, Val."

Go figure. He was the biggest dick of the century, and all Raquel could see was Val being mean to the hottie.

She shrugged. "The truth hurts."

And she wouldn't lie. She got great satisfaction from watching Britton shake with fury. Which he was. Quivering with it. She fought another smile. And in three ... two ... one ...

Britton spun and stalked out of the department.

"Why do you do that?" There was no mistaking the frustration in her coworker's voice. "He's so pretty to look at, and you always chase him off."

"He started it."

"Did you ever think maybe there's a reason for that? Most of us here are just waiting for the two of you to explode in a fit of lust."

Shocked, Val spun on Raquel. "Have you lost your mind? Britton Townsend is the last man on this planet I would invite into my bed, and I'm pretty sure he feels the exact same way about me."

"Whatever you say. I just know that watching you two go at it has become everyone's favorite show." She leaned closer. "We have a pool going, you know?"

"What the — A pool?" Val gave a short, sarcastic snort and shook her head. "You guys need to get a life. Seriously. Betting on when Britton and I will hook up is a complete waste of money. Because it's never going to happen."

"Oh, it's going to happen. That much passion can't be contained."

"Passion? It's called loathing, Raquel."

"Sure it is. Anyway, I've given you a month. Just hold out that long, okay? An extra four hundred bucks would buy that gorgeous Coach clutch I've been drooling over."

Without waiting for a reply, Raquel sauntered off. Val stared after her. Four hundred dollars? She worked with a bunch of crazies. As if she and Britton would ever hook up. She couldn't stand the pompous ass. Yeah ... so there was a little jolt of attraction. No matter what Britton thought, she was a red-blooded woman and he was hot. But that was as far as it went. His foul mouth ensured that.

"Val?"

She glanced over to see Detective Roy Brastic hastening toward her. His handsome face was set in a pensive, pinched look that immediately set off warning bells. She straightened. "What's up?"

When he stopped at her desk, he leaned down and whispered, "Elder Harwood and Councilman Seeder are here. They want you to meet them in the conference room."

What would cause the elder and his second in command to come to her? She was usually summoned to come to them. Normally, members of the High Council steered clear of SPAC, not wanting to draw attention to their secret division inside the homicide unit at Carnal Ridge PD. The human detectives didn't have a clue they were working side-by-side with several shifters, and everyone wanted to keep it that way.

Roy gave her a concerned glance that reflected how she felt. "Something's up. Something bad."

Yeah, it was.

Inhaling, Val pushed to her feet and made her way to the conference room where they usually spread out evidence on complex cases.

What could've pushed the councilmen to come all the way down here? Things had been pretty quiet. Shifter crime had stayed shifter business and hadn't collided with the human world.

Almost four years ago, Elder Harwood had flown up to Jersey and offered her the head position here in Carnal Ridge to replace Britton. Since then, she'd dedicated her life to covering up any shifter involvement in human cases. She then arrested the perps to face the High Council's judgment, which was based on rigid laws created thousands of years ago to ensure that their existence would never become known to humans.

To say the least, her curiosity was piqued at the two councilmen's sudden appearance.

After she walked in and closed the door behind her, she turned to find Councilman Seeder pacing the room, his hands clasped behind his back. Her tension spiked. Being the second in command, Seeder was typically the calmer of the two. On the other hand, Elder Harwood, who always had an air of authority about him, sat in a chair with his elbow resting on the table, his mouth cupped in his palm, staring at the wall — as though his world were imploding around him.

Since Harwood controlled the shifter world, nothing she was about to hear could be good. "Councilmen, you wished to see me?"

The elder gave a start before glancing up at her. "Calhoun. Yes." He waved his hands toward the glass windows. "Get the shades, would you?"

The ominous feeling inside growing, she swallowed. After she went to the window, she met Roy's concerned gaze as she twisted the blinds closed. Taking a steadying breath, she turned. "What can I do for you?"

"There's been an event —"

"An event!" Seeder burst out, his lanky frame shaking. "This is not an event. This is a catastrophe!"

"David," Harwood said between clenched teeth. "You need to calm down."

"Calm down? I told you this would happen. The entire council told you. But you didn't listen. You caused this, and now we are all in jeopardy because of it."

"I have a position to uphold."

"You have a species to protect, which you are failing miserably at."

As fascinating as it was to watch two councilmen going at it — they never showed friction in public — she wasn't getting any closer to the reason they were here. "What happened?"

Seeder exhaled harshly before yanking out a chair and slumping in it. "World Shifters has been breached. Samantha Mills's son has been taken."

"Holy. Shit." Not a very professional response, but in all her years in law enforcement, nothing had ever shocked her more. World Shifters was a living facility for the children who suffered from the shifter mutation — a genetic defect within the shifting genes. Typically shifters did not shift for the first time until their eighteenth birthday, which gave the human side time to establish dominance over the animal side. With the mutation, the beast could control the shift from the second the baby wailed its way into life. The result was a child capable of shifting at any moment into an animal that couldn't be controlled. Temper tantrums could be deadly. "When?"

"A little over an hour ago. They set off small explosives as decoys. Enough to cause some chaos within the compound. Then they got into Charlie's dorm and blew out the wall so they could escape. It was over within minutes."

She pulled out a chair and sat. "Who took responsibility?"

"No one yet. But this arrived about twenty minutes ago." Harwood slid over a yellow package. After retrieving her gloves from her pocket and slipping them on, she took out the note.

The council has until 4:00 p.m. Sunday to release Samantha Mills and revise the current laws on mutated shifters. If you do not comply with these demands, we will make shifters known to the human world by introducing it to Charlie.

Having a hard time believing what she was reading, she reread the missive. The Samantha Mills conviction had been a sore spot within the shifter community for the last six months. After the mother had been arrested for hiding her mutated child instead of registering him with the council — as strictly required by shifter law — everyone knew she would suffer some kind of consequences for her decision. She had put both the shifter and human communities at risk — but life in prison? Life? All because she hadn't wanted to be separated from her child and only allowed to see him once a year on his birthday? The council's verdict had been a turning point in a lot of younger shifters' and half-shifters' attitudes toward the council, churning up waves of frustration and anger at its perceived heartlessness. Protests had run rampant, but they had all been peaceful, held within shifter law. This ... this kidnapping and extortion was unimaginable, and put everyone at risk — in a far worse way than Samantha ever had.

At least the perpetrators were giving the High Council a week to comply with their demands.

The time frame showed they understood that revising the laws couldn't happen overnight. It wouldn't happen overnight. For the kidnappers to get what they wanted, the High Council would have to exhaust all other options first.

Which meant these people knew she would be coming for them.

"There's more," Seeder warned.

"More?"

The elder slid an iPad across the table. "A reminder about what's at stake — as if we needed one."

A video was already loaded. She touched the play button in the middle of the screen. A little four-year-old towheaded boy was sitting off by himself on the leaf-covered ground. Trees surrounded him. There was no sound from anyone other than the little boy asking if he could see his mommy now, saying over and over that he missed her, and that Gina said his mommy wouldn't be able to visit him for a very long time.

At the sorrow in the child's voice, she clenched her teeth against the anger — and guilt — that swelled inside her. From the get-go, she'd hated this case. Hated her part in it. But her job was to uphold shifter law, and Samantha Mills had broken it.

On the video the child's body began to shake, and a split second later, his clothes shredded around an emerging wolf twice the size of the boy. The animal bared its teeth, growling, then leaped off-screen. A scream came from the background, snarling, gnashing. More screams.

"Can't get him to change ... Tranquilize him ...," a voice called.

The video ended.

Val laid the iPad on the table and rubbed her forehead. Unfortunately, tranquilizing children when their beast became aggressive was the only way to stop that kind of situation from escalating to something far worse — to keep the victim, or the child, from being killed.

She was trying to find words, but was having a hell of a time coming up with anything. If humans saw an event like the one depicted in the video, they would never believe shifters were safe to live among — which had a ring of truth to it. Normal shifters were as safe as any human. Mutated shifters, especially children with no control over their beast, were potentially very dangerous.

Children like Charlie. The bastards had played this smart by picking an innocent child who would easily capture hearts with his sweet smile, but who could then shift into a raging, snarling animal without warning.

On top of that, the fact that the boy was a flipping wolf instead of another, less savage, animal would feed into every werewolf horror movie humans had ever seen and cause mass pandemonium. A witch hunt would ensue. And when the humans started to realize that there was no way to identify a half shifter, especially because the females were beastless, the panic, accusations, and reprisals would only get worse.

"So what's the plan?" she finally asked.

"For you to find and arrest whoever did this," Harwood said.

Yeah, she'd already figured that.

Seeder pressed his lips tight and shook his head.

"I take it you don't agree with that order, Councilman Seeder?" Val asked.

"The entire shifter community knows it is time for reform when it comes to mutant law. Elder Harwood is the only fool who can't see it, but he holds all the power."

True. Nothing could be changed without Harwood's signature. Taking mutant children from their parents because they refused to acknowledge how dangerous their children really were was just one of many archaic laws the council refused to alter. Val personally thought it was time for a clean sweep of the entire council, but it didn't work like that. High Council positions had been passed down from the founding fathers to their firstborn children, and down through the generations. When Harwood died, his daughter would become the newest member. However, the elder title would pass on to the next oldest shifter — Councilman Seeder. A few months ago, this wouldn't have brought any change within their community, but the councilman's sudden change in opinion surprised her.

This is a love story that was 10 years in the making.. Lissa had a huge crush on Daniel when she was 12, at 18 she seduced him on his 20 Birthday before she left the next day for Africa. Not having confidence in herself or relationships she stays away for 10 years. Now she's back determined to get him out of her system, but his sisters ask for her help to 'fix' him. He's changed...aloof and cold as a robot, with a 'witch-e' scare-e girlfriend...he's not the same Daniel. He was attacked and changed into a werewolf and until his wolf can get stronger he has to play along with those he hates in order to protect his family. Lissa is definitely a complication Even with a serious undertone there is a lot of playfull-ness with the characters and a lot of steamy interaction.. . You'll love Lissa and Daniels sisters An enjoyable read.

4 - "Come on Danny. For one night, pretend I'm your princess." Stars. I really enjoyed Operation: Saving Daniel already being a fan of Nina's contemporary romances, I am happy to say her PNR writing style is just as enjoyable. I loved the characters, their development, the pace and the fact that their story initially began a decade ago. This is a pretty quick read, but the story didn't feel rushed. Daniel Melville *Swoons can put his paws on me anytime! "Were you always this beautiful? How did I ever walk away?" This is one of those stories that you start looking for a few hours of escapism, and finish knowing it will be a book you are most likely to read again and again. "I wanted you to know... I love you. I always loved you." Straight onto book 2 of the Melville Sisters series for me!

I had been hesitant about reading this book and had been putting it off. This is the 3rd book I've read from Nina Croft but the other 2 were contemporaries and I wasn't sure I would like a paranormal. I am totally kicking myself right now. One of the things I really liked about Nina's previous books was her sense of humor and it really made the story for me. Lissa and Julia have been friends since before their teens. Lissa had a bad home life and was welcomed into Julia's family fold. She's always had a crush on Julia's only brother but her family life hasn't left her with the best opinion if relationships so she avoids him through her terns. Daniel has always been aware of Lissa. He watched her grow up and waited, hoping she'd see him as more than Julia's older brother. On the night of his 20th bday she seduced him knowing she was leaving he country in the morning. He knew she was panicked, and let her go. 10 years later, Daniel's sisters need her help. Daniel's acting strange and they think he's getting ready to propose to a woman they don't like. His sisters want Lissa to seduce him again. But is it too late?

Another hit by Nina Croft!

Lissa took Daniel's virginity years ago as a birthday gift. The next day she left as she knew she wasn't what he needed in life. Years later she is back because Julie her best friend and Daniel's sister needs her help. While she is ready to settle down with someone she knows she has to help out. Daniel has gotten engaged to a woman his family has dubbed the Evil One and has been acting strange. They think Lissa can get him to change his mind and get to the bottom of what s wrong. What they don't know is Daniel is now a werewolf. He was turned against his will and must keep away from those he loves to keep them safe. He still cares for Lissa but won't put her at risk. Lissa isn't one to back down from a challenge and will do what ever it takes to help Daniel. Lissa is someone who has made it a point in life to help others. It has taken it's toll on her at times but made her stronger than ever in other ways. Even when she gets scared she still takes it in good stride. She cares about Daniel but is afraid to let him know at times. She as Daniel says likes to stir things up. Daniel is brilliant and while he was turned against his will he still does things his own way. He hates having someone watch him all the time and tries his best to hide who he cares about, He shows his true colors around Lissa and you can see the old Daniel. I liked both of them and most of the characters except Sophia. I hated her so bad. She really is The Evil One. I really enjoyed this book and couldn't wait to turn to the next page. There is lots of action as Sophia will do anything to keep Daniel in line. I liked the plot and how Daniel tried his best to keep those he cares about safe. You get to see how he and Lissa got together years ago and how each left their mark on each other even back then. They are the perfect couple and Lissa makes sure he knows that. I love one scene in this book so much as she shows lots of guts asking him something. I really hope the author writes more books with these characters also want to see more of them along with Julie and Lissa'a brother. This is an excellent, action packed, romantic paranormal book.

ten years after Melissa seduced Daniel and ran away afterwards, she comes back to finish this chapter in her life and go on. but her best friend, who also happens to be Daniels sister, ask her for help because Daniel changed and is now the total opposite from everything she thought he was before. they know something is wrong and try to help him. this book was a bit difficult for me because the tone of it changed through out the book and while I thought at the beginning it is more of a fun book, then it became very dark and at the end it was more of a Paranormal romance than before I am not sure I really liked Daniel and I don't know why exactly. he could have been the perfect alpha male hero but something was missing. Lissa was interesting. I adored Julia and Lissas brother - and maybe there will be another book here. all in all it was a good read with a good but very straight story. I was given an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review

***Received from Entangled Publishing for an honest review*** It isn't often I read a story where the heroine one-night-stands the hero; that idea alone is often interesting enough to explore in a story. That the one-night stand occurred ten years prior is what intrigued me the most about Melissa and Daniel. Ten years is a long time to be apart, to change, to move on. In Melissa's case, it isn't necessarily moving on but coming home to a man she loved and ran away from once. Recovering from malaria, she comes home to find that Daniel has not only changed but appears to have moved on as well. The Daniel she knew has disappeared, leaving behind a cold, hard, and cynical man who doesn't want her but seems to need her. Once upon a time, Daniel loved Melissa enough to let her go, knowing her need for a little bit of freedom was important to her. Seeing her again ten years later, he knows he hasn't stopped loving her, but he's changed more than she realizes. He won't risk placing her in harm's way so he does what he feels is best: he pushes her away. Or tries to. Melissa's tenacity is a thing of beauty in this story. She doesn't stop, doesn't give up. She uses her head and follows her heart, putting the pieces together until she has some semblance of an answer to what's wrong with Daniel. In the face of his one true love's stubbornness, Daniel's resolve to keep her at arm's length weakens. This time around, it isn't about the sex between them but the emotional connection they share. Daniel's strength in the midst mounting strife is amazing to read about. The control he exudes over his emotions and supernatural powers shows he's not just a protector with the potential to lead, but he's also a man on a mission to right the wrong that forced him into the position he's in now. Being a werewolf might have its advantages but he doesn't care to lose another loved one to the crazed maniac others call Alpha just because he is one. An interesting take on rekindled love, the animosity and depravity within a pack, and how one man's stand against the evil that's demanded his submission leads to a happy ever after that's been a long time coming and so very well deserved.

ARC given by Entangled Publishing for a honest review. At eighteen, Melissa seduced her best friend Julia's brother only to run away shortly after. It was slow so I put it aside for a few days and then picked it up again. I'm glad I didn't give up on it because after a few chapters it started picking up. I'm a sucker for young love, losing that love, then it comes back when you are older. And of course adding werewolves is a nice touch. So just stick it out through the first couple of chapters and you will enjoy this book.

Review: What a great story, I loved every minute of it. Ten years ago Lissa seduced Daniel into giving her his virginity, I like that the Author has made the girl the seducer. But then Lissa leaves the next day, leaving behind Daniel and family and friends. Ten years later Lissa is recovering from malaria and Daniel's sisters want Lissa to come stay and participate in Operation Save Daniel. I love Daniel's sisters and Lissa they are funny and perfect trying to split up Daniel and Sophia "The Evil One". Wow, is Sophia Evil with a capital "E". What Lissa and the sisters do not know is that Daniel was made a werewolf by the local Alpha to find a way to make werewolves immune to silver. Now, the Alpha is crazy and evil too, they made Daniel watch as they tortured and killed one of his sisters. Ms. Croft wrote these baddies perfectly because they are so deranged and evil and totally nonredeemable. Daniel has been keeping the secret of his other life from his family and then the girl who got away, Lissa, comes back and now he must try to push her away to save her. That does not work because there is just too much chemistry between them. So for me the first part of the book is lighter and a little more fun and the second part of the book is action packed with Daniel trying to protect those the loves and he keeps plotting to get rid of the alpha. Without giving away all the plot twists and turns, if you like action and suspense then this is going to be right up your alley. This was an excellent book and I hope we see more of these characters in the future, there seems to be things left hanging so we will see... 4 stars

Even though the book is about werewolves there is not much paranormal going on. Overall this is a good book - very pleasant to read like all of Nina Croft’s books. She is a very talented author and I like her a lot. However this book was lacking something. I think it was details. The paranormal world could have been deeper. There was just this one pack of werewolves. I also had the impression that the characters were not well developed. We only get to know the surface of them. Lissa might have been in Africa and that should have given her some depth in character. But it did not because we don’t get to know what she did there, why she went there in the first place and so on. According to Croft Lissa fled to Africa because she was running away from Daniel and her feelings for him. But that can’t be everything in my opinion. If a character does something so potent as going to Africa for ten years it has a lot of potential for a great story. However Nina Croft didn’t quite use the potential. It was the same with the other characters in the book. You get to know the basic background information about them but that’s about it. Because of that I didn’t really feel connected with the book. The story was good and also Nina Croft’s style of writing is great. However the book could have been better. There was also something missing in the story line. [Mind you there will be spoilers from here on!] The end was kind of unspectacular. Julia gets scratched by a werewolf and consequently will turn into one. But we never get to know what happens. (Maybe she gets her own book then it would make sense) However the sexual chemistry between Lissa and Daniel was great. They couldn’t leave their hands off each other once they were alone.

This was a little slow to pick up, but once the book got moving it was amazing. Daniel, the hero, is rough around the edges but eventually comes around. His behavior is in part to the deep secret he keeps and I believe in larger part due to the fact that he has meddling sisters. Lissa, our heroine, is perfect in every way. She seduced the only man she has ever loved for his birthday and then promptly left him. She comes back into his life after an extended absence, and takes the revealing of Daniels deep secret with basically a shrug of the shoulders. It seems she barely flinched before moving into "save Daniel" mode. The steam factor in this book is about a B+. It is written in the style of a historical romance without quite making it into full erotica. Although it seemed at least once per chapter Daniel and Lissa were constantly going at it. This book made me laugh, it made me mad and it made me blush. All signs of a good book. This is a story of true love that knows no bounds and is very well written once you get past the first 3 chapters. Disclosure - I received a copy in exchange for a honest review. Woowza! What a great story!! Ms. Croft does a brilliant job of crafting a story that keeps you on your toes from beginning to end. Lissa is an awesome chick, she is bold and brassy, while still remaining soft and sweet. She really does take things in stride and I loved her friendship with the heroes sisters. He never really stands a chance against them! Daniel has a lot to deal with werewolves, keeping his family safe and the girl of his dreams returning. I give him props for trying to keep his distance but when you are dealing with love that generally does not work out. This story has plenty of meat on it's bones. It made me laugh and cry and fan my face! Oh la, that is just what I am looking for in my stories! The steam is more mainstream hot and heavy but still very delicious. The foreplay is...well..damn! This is my first encounter with Ms Croft but you can bet your sweet bippy I will be looking into her shelves and snagging more! *Disclosure - I received a copy in exchange for a honest review. While Daniel was her fairytale prince, Lissa didn’t believe in happy ever afters. Ten years and a near death experience later, Lissa is ready for a husband and family. But a cry for help from Julia puts that dream on hold. Daniel is acting weird and he’s about to marry his long term girlfriend—AKA The Evil One. Someone needs to save him. Daniel has never stopped loving Lissa. Ten years ago when he gave her a little freedom, he always intended that one day they would be together. Right up until the moment he was bitten by a werewolf. Now, Daniel has to hide what he is. He won’t risk anyone else, especially the woman he loves. But Lissa is back. Their attraction is stronger than ever and Lissa is nothing if not tenacious. My Thoughts The 2nd chance romance scenario is once again front and center and it made me jump at the chance to read this short story that turned out to be lighter in unexpected places and at the same time deeper in meaning in others. Daniel is the middle sibling of 5, 4 of whom are girls, and most of his life has been spent in the pursuit of scientific knowledge. Imagine his shock when that became the reason for a werewolf targeting him to join it’s pack and provide a way for their species to become immune to injury or death from silver. Lissa was too young ten years ago at 18 to understand what she was walking away from was a once in a lifetime love, now all those years later older and wiser she is ready to put her earlier infatuation for Daniel behind her and find the man who will provide her with the family life she finally yearns for. This is a paranormal romance that has characteristics of Beauty and The Beast but on a more believable note. Daniel and Lissa’s relationship is one that has been on the back burner for more than 16 years, as both of them were attracted in their earlier teens without acting upon the feelings until he was 20 and she was 18. I found upon them reuniting with each other to be sweet and long overdue, also wanted to take Sophia out of the picture long before she was removed from Daniel’s life! It always comes down to a final battle between good and evil, in this case it also came down to a battle between Daniel’s conscience as he was so afraid of becoming the very thing that he was fighting against. There is a lot going on that was mentioned almost in passing that can be used in furthering this as a series, especially how things turn out for Daniels sister Julia in the future and Lissas brother Jason as well. Plus it would be really nice to revisit with Daniel and Melissa to see if their dreams for the future had come to pass too! [EArc from Netgalley in exchange for honest review]

A Happy Ever After Tale with Sexy Shifters! Daniel was Melissa's best friend's brother; she had been in love with him since she was 12. In an attempt to get him out of her mind, Melissa seduced Daniel the day before she left him. She was gone 10 years but failed miserably at forgetting him. When she caught malaria and almost died, she realized that she didn't want to be alone anymore and wanted a happy ever after with Daniel. Unfortunately, when she returned, she found that Daniel was locked into another relationship... but was he really? It took me a bit to get into this but once I did...I didn't want to put it down. So, IF you also think it's a bit slow and confusing at the beginning ... practice a bit patience at the very beginning as it's well worth it! I had to run to the grocery and all I could think of was how a certain someone was going to be saved. I loved Daniel and Melissa... Daniel had so many obstacles to overcome including his overbearing, but loving, sisters! I would recommend this read to anyone who loves a good paranormal. This is the 2nd book I've read by Nina Croft and it won't be the last! Very good! 3.75 stars!

Melissa was only 18 when she seduced her best friends older brother before she went to be a missionary. Then after 10 years of living out of the country she gets a life threatening illness and decides its time to come home for a change. Her best friend Julia convinces her that they need to do something to save Daniel from his current girlfriend Sophia. Julia and her sisters have nicknamed her "The evil one". Melissa comes back and meets with Daniel and agrees something is up with him and then can't deny that the attraction has been there even after not seeing him for 10 years. She tries to talk to Daniel and find out what is going on. She doesn't figure it out until she is sucked into his world unwillingly. There are a lot of twists and turns in this book as well as some very great romance. You can relate with Melissa wanting to find the one and her "prince charming". Great read!

Ten years ago Melissa Jackson seduced Daniel Melville. The next day she left town, but she never forgot him. After her near death experience in Africa, she decides to see him and tell him that she loves him and explain her actions. However, life is never simple. Julia, his sister, asks Lissa to help save Daniel. He's going through life like a robot and to make matters worse he's dating Sophia AKA The Evil One. She knows something is wrong. But what? Now she is a woman with a mission. Can she help Daniel and make him hers? Nina Croft weaves a tale that captures you and keeps you hooked. Lissa and Daniel are wildly passionate but they guard their heart. Nina captures their emotions and their pain. All the characters are well developed and interesting. The story is well plotted and delivers surprise after surprise. I loved the book and I'm hoping that we get to know more about the rest of the cast. I want to know their secrets.

Powerful story! Although this is a romance story at heart, this book brought about other emotions with its secondary story for me. First and foremost, I loved the selfless love Daniel and Lissa had for each other. They were constantly putting the other above their own needs. Very touching. I loved the sarcastic and sisterly wit Julia brought to the story. She was funny (would love her story, maybe with Jason). Onto the secondary story. It has been a while where I read a story and felt such animosity towards a character, but Sophia. I just wanted her gone! Such evilness in a character can be quite shocking. Glad to see her part in this book play out the way it did. Wants of retribution for her character were so strong. Loved the angst and the romantic feel of the whole book.

Melissa also known as Lissa has had a crush on Daniel for as long as she can remember and he's her best friends brother. On his 20th birthday she gives him a present he won't ever forget. Then she's gone for 10 years and when she gets sick, she decided that she's been gone long enough. When she returns she found out the Daniel is about to be engaged to a woman nobody likes and that's where Operation saving Daniel begins. Daniel hasn't seen Lissa for 10 years and now isn't a good time for her to be around, so much has changed but he couldn't stay away. Daniel was changed in to a werewolf against his will because he's the best scientist and the leader Ethan wanted a cure so werewolves wouldn't he harmed by sliver. Daniel had to put up with Sophia and a sham of an engagement, even though he can't stand for her to around him. Sophia sees Lissa as a threat and sends her a message through Daniels phone for her to meet him but she doesn't know until to late that it wasn't him. Lissa only hope someone will save her before Sophia and her goons kill her. She can't believe her eyes, as Sophia changes into a wolf. As Lissa fears her death, another wolf attacks Sophia and saves her. When she gets to safety and falls asleep with a wolf. When she wakes up it Daniel and they can't keep their hands off each other. Lissa doesn't care what Daniel is she loves him no matter what and he loves her. Daniel goes to meet the other wolfs that helped him save Lissa and they want Daniel to challenge Ethan to death. Daniel doesn't know if he can win but he's willing to try, then he finds out that Ethan has he's sister and Lissa and he would do anything to keep them safe. Ethan has hurt Daniels sister by the time he gets there and can see that she will be a wolf as well. Daniel tries to get Lissa to leave but she trying to stay but Daniel doesn't need the distraction. Daniel challenges Ethan and he accepts. They start to battle and he hears Lissa and doesn't understand why she didn't leave but can't do anything about now and takes Ethan down. Lissa goes to Daniels side after the fight and Daniel takes off and has his wicked way with her. Now with the threat gone and Daniels the alpha, they can live happily ever after.

Lissa’s a great character, a complete package. She’s smart, she’s relatively tough, she’s strong-willed and never once, throughout the course of the book, does she have a “too stupid to live” moment. It could have all too easily ended up that way, but while she’s determined not to run away when Daniel tries to send her away as the dangerous mounts, she’s not incredibly idiotic about it and I appreciate a heroine like that. Now for Daniel. Somehow, when reading the description of the book, I completely overlooked a single word: werewolf. I had absolutely no clue (I blanked out the fact that Covet’s contemporary with a paranormal twist line) that there would be any non-human critters roaming around until Daniel’s thinking about how he became a werewolf. Um, oops? It’s great that Daniel wasn’t born a werewolf, and in fact I suspect no one’s really born a werewolf any more, given the notion at the end that werewolves tend to miscarry because they have to change forms in the middle of the month. He took what could have been a horrible situation, and he really wasn’t happy about it, and instead worked to better his situation rather than just letting life happen to him. The wolf pack is led by an evil wolf of a man who’s using Daniel’s loyalty and protectiveness toward his family against him to make him use his brain to find some sort of immunity to silver for werewolves. Daniel’s not so happy about that and has formed a plan to challenge the Alpha for leadership when he’s ready. And then comes Lissa. He’s never gotten over her after she seduced him on his 20th birthday, though he’s long buried those feelings. She’s never totally gotten over him, and in fact had come back to finally get him out of her system once and for all. Of course life’s never that easy, and there’s the whole werewolf mess to deal with on top of their feelings issue. I’ve never wanted a character to die as much as I wanted the villainess in this piece to die (the sister of the wolf who changed Daniel). She poses a huge threat to the two, both emotionally and physically. Ultimately, I like the resolution that Ms. Croft brings her hero/heroine to, and think that all the characters got exactly what they deserved in the end. I hope to see other books in this same basic series. After all, there are some new werewolves that could use some mates! Thanks again Ms. Croft and Entangled. I love these books!
