Andrew Farley is one of my favorite up and coming Christian writers and teachers.  In his latest book,  Operation Screwtape: The Art of Spiritual War , he takes a stab at the topic of spiritual warfare by revisiting C. S. Lewis’ classic Screw Tape Letters. This is a very strong book. This is a very good book.  However, it is also a "terrifying, hilarious, little-too-true-to-be-fun" book. Using the same technique as Lewis’ original the book is put forward as a tactical war manual, laying out various lines of attack  that Satan's minions, called dragons, can employ in the war for men's souls, called patients.  Operation Screwtape is clearly a fiction book, however, the methods of spiritual warfare described in its pages are obviously part of the real battles raging around humanity every day. By thinking about reality in terms of the enemy's tactics to “steal, kill, and destroy” us, the Farley illuminates for the reader how to avoid the land mines laid out by the enemy and engage in the battle for their lives, the lives of our friends and the lives of their family.  Considering the subject matter it was great that the chapters were short enough to take in small bites, then stop and digest what you have read.  A very good book.   Farley is not Lewis, but who is?   That  being said, this is a very presentation and revelation of the battle we wage not against flesh and blood but against the prince and principalities of the air.
