Operations Nickel and Cauldron
This is a combat pilot's personal experience of two significant operations during the early stages of the Rhodesia/Zimbabwe 1965 to 1980.
It was the first time, internally, for No 4 Squadron (Provost aircraft) and No 2 Squadron (Vampire aircraft) of the Royal Rhodesian Air Force fired deadly air-to-ground weapons on human targets within the borders of the country. The consequences of Operation Nickel and Cauldron was huge. The incursion of Nelson Mandela's Umkonto we Sizwe resulted in the South Africans introducing their SA Police and military aircraft and helicopters for Border Control operations.
The School of Infantry named their main lecture hall "Cauldron".
The author was awarded a very unique "Nickel Cross" - the title of the author's autobiography that took 18 years to publication.
