Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition of McGinty's text originally published in 1991. The structure is similar to the previous edition, with timely updates throughout.
Purpose: The goal is to provide a satisfactory and thorough reference for operative arthroscopy for the next five years. Because arthroscopy and arthroscopic techniques are rapidly expanding and becoming increasingly demanding, maintaining the most current view of the field is an absolute necessity for the practicing arthroscopist.
Audience: This book is designed for the orthopedic surgeon who includes arthroscopy in his or her armamentarium. It also serves as the primary reference of operative arthroscopy for the resident and student.
Features: The illustrations are excellent and support the book's goal of being a technical reference. Most of the reference lists that follow each chapter have been updated to allow the most current references possible. The list of contributing authors is a literal "who's who" of operative arthroscopy.
Assessment: My copy of the first edition of McGinty's book is well worn and has seen great use during the past five years. This second edition is a worthy and necessary update in a field that is blossoming and changing so quickly. This book should serve as a cornerstone of every medical library and should be near at hand for every orthopedist who practices arthroscopy. I am sure my copy of the second edition will become well worn during the next five years.
