Reviewer: Samuel J. Chmell, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This book is a meaningful condensation of the myriad spinal surgical techniques available presented in a well-structured fashion. This is an update of the first edition published in 2008 and it includes access to an online version with additional resources.
Purpose: There is a plethora of lengthy, extensive, multivolume publications concerning the spine. These textbooks typically provide an overview of spinal care or are intended as a reference for specific spinal conditions. This book is intended to serve a different purpose. It is meant to function as an operating room companion, providing the spine surgeon with directions and tidbits on 40 of the most commonly performed spinal procedures from some of the most highly experienced spine surgeons.
Audience: Surgeons, fellows, and residents directly engaged in spinal surgery are the intended readers.
Features: This book provides a concise but complete description of commonly performed spinal operations. Particular attention is paid to various aspects of the technique to avoid complications. Each chapter includes an excellent evidence-based bibliography which has a brief synopsis of each publication. A couple of the chapters are written by fellows, who do not have the experience that the majority of the contributors do.
Assessment: Recent advances in engineering and biomaterials, as well as increasing anatomic sophistication, have led to a surge of new surgical treatment options for patients with spinal disorders, justifying this second edition. Both the book and the online version will prove valuable in the operating theater.
