Overview

Operative Techniques: Sports Medicine Surgery offers you all the how-to step-by-step guidance from experts Bruce Reider, Michael Terry, and Matthew Provencher that you need to perform the latest techniques in this specialty. Large full-color intraoperative photos, accompanied by detailed illustrations, dedicated website, and companion DVD demonstrate procedures, both arthroscopic and open. This concise, accessible multimedia resource shows you what you need to know and how to do it all—from ACL reconstruction and labral tear repair to loose body removal and treatment of turf toe. The result is a detailed, easy-to-use reference that no sports medicine surgeon should be without.

Editorial Reviews

Doody Reviews
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This addition to the Operative Techniques series on sports medicine is a nice complement to previous publications that have covered topics ranging from hand and foot to arthroplasty and spine. All books in the series use a stepwise, bullet-point format.
Purpose: This one is designed to be a user friendly, step-by-step, clinically relevant, and efficient review of surgical management of common orthopedic sports surgeries.
Audience: The intended audience is broad, and includes students and residents in orthopedic surgery, generalist and subspecialist orthopedic surgeons, and physician assistants. I was surprised by the inclusion of physician assistants, but quickly recognized that the stepwise format would be perfect for residents or physician assistants in preparing for orthopedic sports surgical cases.
Features: The step-by-step approach precludes an in-depth review of background and foundational information characteristic of a classic textbook, but this format has unique and significant advantages. Every chapter contains the most important aspects of patient evaluation, imaging, and treatment with the focus on the sequential approach to the surgical procedure. Each expert contributor adds appropriate clinical pearls to help surgeons avoid intraoperative hazards and optimize outcomes. Additional unique features include access to the entire book online and supportive videos of selected procedures both online and on an accompanying DVD. The illustrations and video quality are excellent, adding significant value to the offering.
Assessment: This is an efficient preoperative review for residents, physicians, and general orthopedists when they are preparing for orthopedic sports procedures with which they have less experience. I am confident that review of this book immediately before a case will optimize the intraoperative technique and postoperative outcome.
