From The CriticsReviewer: Alan League, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: Effectively using text, photographs, images, and video, this book provides clear instruction on proper technique in foot and ankle surgery and points out clinical pearls and pitfalls to avoid. Part of the Operative Techniques series, it also includes a DVD with an hour of surgical videos and access to a companion website.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide detailed surgical techniques for foot and ankle surgery. Few books to date have attempted to cover the full breadth of this field.
Audience: Although the intended audience is both general orthopedists and foot and ankle specialists, this book and its accompanying material also would be extremely helpful for orthopedic residents and fellows.
Features: The book is organized into sections on forefoot, midfoot, hindfoot/ankle, and leg and covers nearly 60 separate procedures. Each chapter is dedicated to a different procedure and includes separate sections on indications, examination and imaging, relevant surgical anatomy, exposure/approaches, procedure, and postoperative care. No book could cover every way to perform each foot and ankle procedure, but the authors admirably provide a very thorough list of the most common surgeries performed by foot and ankle specialists.
Assessment: In the tradition of the Operative Techniques series, this is a useful, well-organized, easy-to-read reference on orthopedic foot and ankle surgery. Written by recognized experts, it sets the standard for surgical techniques in foot and ankle surgery.
