In retrospect, Opiate seems a little haphazard, but it's possible to hear the seeds of Tool's bleak, cerebral metal in such cuts as "Sweat" and "Opiate." The two live tracks, "Cold and Ugly" and "Jerk-Off," don't sound out of place, since they share Tool's characteristic undertow of gloom and doom and the EP as a whole points toward the ground the group explored in Undertow and Ænima.

The reviews that I have read from this have been disheartening. This album is the roots to Tool. If you dont like this then your are not a true fan. Undertow is great too but opiate lets you see what it takes for a true hard rock band to take off. I can not beleive the negetive reviews that this recieves. Tool is about evolution of music, body, and mind and you can see and hear that through their discography.

This is the best album ever produced by Tool This one really rocks, there are no bad songs every one is brilliant! Their sound is unique and every song has meaning to it. These guys would definetly kick butt live. This album is worth buying...Do yourself a favour and check it out...

This is a great starter album for Tool. Superb sounding, hard hitting underground sound.

Some people say this isn't good, but I think it's great. It's the old Tool sound. If you like Undertow, you'll love this. I recommend it.

How can some of you who say you like Tool, not like this record? Yes, there are no quiet-loud-quiet elements, its all just loud but the riffs, the rage, the irreverence--and yes, the melody--are all in there. Awesome seminal EP from one of the best to make music.

This is not good at all. And don't get me wrong. I love Tool. But, I kept waiting for some of the songs here to get good, and they didn't. Other songs were bad from the start. People who love this must love 10,000 days, which is just all right. Play the music samples.

This isn't the CD that made Tool famous. "Undertow" is the great CD that made Tool famous. "Opiate" doesn't have any hits or any good songs. This is a CD that will turn you off to Tool. Play the samples. Some fans who know nothing about Tool love "Opiate."
