Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Amanda MacGregor
There is no question that Oprah Winfrey's influence is far-reaching. From books to movies, music to everyday products, Oprah is a cultural tastemaker. This biography from the "Celebrities with Heart" series gives fans insight into her personal background, examines her rise to fame, and details her many charitable contributions. Born to unmarried parents, Oprah moved around a lot as a child and suffered many hard times. Raped at age nine, Oprah suffered other abuse as she grew older. Her early teen years were marked by troublesome behavior, like skipping school, running away, and getting pregnant. Able to turn over a new leaf, Oprah went on to become an honor student. Her professional life grew out of her natural aptitude for oration. Much of the book details her various jobs in radio and on TV as a news anchor and a talk show host. In addition to hosting a wildly successful talk show, Oprah is an actor, producer, and philanthropist. Teenagers will of course know who Oprah is, although they may not be her target audience. That hardly matters, though; this inspiring biography will engage most readers as it illustrates just how far a person can go in life with the right mindset and work ethic. Readers may be surprised to see the struggles she has had, or they may be motivated by her commitment to championing the rights of children and the less fortunate. Full-color pictures throughout nicely enhance the text, as does the chronology and list of selected awards. Extensive chapter notes, a list for further reading, and an index round out the biography. This book does a fantastic job of taking a larger-than-life figure and presenting her as a down-to-earth and generous woman who never forgot her roots. Reviewer: Amanda MacGregor
