Description: This book provides a comprehensive review of clinical optics topics, primarily intended for board exams. It features useful illustrations and exam prep questions.
Purpose: The stated purpose is to provide a review of optics for ophthalmology residents preparing for written and oral exams, and to be a somewhat humorous take on the subject. The authors note that many aspects of clinical optics have changed since the last "gold standard" textbook was written many years ago. Their update to the clinical world of optics does meet these objectives. It makes a challenging topic lively and readable and provides a wealth of study questions for exam takers.
Audience: The primary audience is ophthalmology residents preparing for written and oral exams, and it certainly meets this goal. However, it is a great review resource for practicing clinicians as well as optometry students and practicing optometrists. The authors are credible authorities given their academic credentials within ophthalmology.
Features: This book is a comprehensive review of optics and, as such, covers a great wealth of topics related to eye and vision care. Its primary purpose is to prepare ophthalmology residents for written and oral exams. To that end, each chapter includes a well-written and considered list of learning objectives, a "why does this matter?" explanation, and a thorough section of practice questions. The authors take inspiration from a classic book of clinical optics that features humorous explanations and lots of memory devices to help exam takers. One chapter "talks" to the readers like a pirate to better explain the use of telescopes! The progression of topics is organized around what type of exam readers are going to encounter. The beginning sections are geared toward written ophthalmology board exams (a little more geared toward theoretical/geometrical optics) and later sections expand on these topics toward the more practical, clinical aspects for oral exams. There is a nice amount of cross-reference between the sections, pointing readers toward more in-depth coverage of a topic later in the book. The book is filled with great illustrations to demonstrate principles. One chapter that is particularly good covers clinical aspects of prisms in glasses; it may be the best chapter I have read on this topic. A later chapter on physical optics gives an especially good review of ocular aberrations, a topic that is challenging to explain and understand how it affects vision (and how aberrations can be corrected). The book is described as "an absolute review textbook" and that is mostly true. This is not necessarily the best absolute introduction to most of the material, especially as the chapters progress to more advanced topics. Although its intended audience is not optometry students, it would likely provide a good review for them as well, with a few caveats. First, as would be expected, astigmatism is primarily discussed in plus-cylinder form, though the authors do discuss conversion between forms. Second, the contact lens chapters are not as in-depth as optometry students would be expected to know. Third, although discussion of ophthalmic optics is fairly broad, some foundational information (such as back and front vertex powers) is not discussed. The book does make up for this with wonderful coverage of surgical eye care and procedures.
Assessment: This book is an excellent and up-to-date review of clinical optics. Its humor shines through and does an excellent job keeping the readers entertained and on track while covering some very difficult-to-read topics. It is well organized and presents topics in a logical progression, letting the new material build on the old.
