Editorial Reviews

Criticas
Born into a family of healers in rural Mexico, Ruiz has devoted his work to the ancient Toltec wisdom of his ancestors, becoming a best-selling Spanish-language author in the United States. Los cuatro acuerdos (The Four Agreements, Amber-Allen Pub., 1999) has been a smash hit in both English and Spanish, and held the number one spot on the Criticas best seller list for three months. A near-death experience in the '70s prompted Ruiz to reevaluate his life and to incorporate Toltec wisdom into his surgical practice and his study of religion. Here, in eight short chapters, each closing with a prayer, Ruiz invites his readers to approach the Creator as an equal and share communion with him. Despite a few religious motifs, this book is not based on Christian ideology but on a New Age belief system that focuses on love, forgiveness, gratitude, and marriage of the self with the Creator, among other ideals. While the text is brief, the message is not small. In a conversational tone that blends real-life scenarios and anecdotes, Ruiz teaches readers to acquire a deeper awareness of themselves and of those who surround them. A good addition to bookstores with an inquisitive, self-improving population.
