Chapter 1: Introduction

This unit focuses on the first Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) ,: ; Applications Consultant exam, which is titled Financial - Management. In this first chapter, you will cover the following areas of the Financials package:
  • Essential setup and implementation steps
  • Oracle General Ledger and Assets functionality
  • Overview of information flow between Oracle integrated applications
The chapter begins with an overview of the steps necessary to set up and implement the Oracle financial management applications, including special considerations you must take into account along the way. The second section of this chapter provides an introduction to the Oracle Financials Applications, describing the purpose and functionality of each application. The chapter wraps up with a section discussing how the Financials Applications integrate with other Oracle Applications modules, and how information is shared between these applications.

Essential Setup and Implementation Steps

To set up and implement Oracle financial management applications, you must follow a proven methodology. Methodology serves as a road map for the implementation process. It consists of defined steps, and within each step there is a concrete list of tasks and deliverables. The following are essential steps in setting up and implementing Financial Management Applications: I. Planning During the planning step, you will complete the following tasks:

  • Determine project goals, milestones, and critical success factors
  • Define the implementation team staffing, roles, and responsibilities
  • Develop the implementation timeline
  • Design the technicalarchitecture
  • Plan initial training
2. System configuration During the system configuration step, you will complete these tasks:
  • Install hardware and software
  • Establish the network infrastructure to allow connectivity
3. Requirements gathering During the requirements gathering step, as the name indicates, you gather requirements. This is not an easy process, but it is an essential one. The more detailed your requirements are, the more successful your implementation will be. When you gather requirements, your deliverables will include:
  • Narrative documents, which provide text descriptions of each requirement
  • Process flow diagrams, which graphically depict how work flows from one stage to the next
Be sure to include your reporting requirements in this documentation. This is a step that is often forgotten, to the regret of the project manager! 4. Fit analysis During fit analysis, you map your requirements to the functional components of the Oracle Applications. If you discover that certain requirements do not fit the default functionality inherent in Oracle Applications, you have three choices:
  • Customize the Oracle Applications
  • Modify the requirements
  • Create workarounds
5. Setup During the setup step, you perform two types of setup: business and technical. For the business setup step, you configure the Oracle Applications according to the requirements. For the technical setup step, you must build conversion programs, interfaces, and customizations. This will be covered in greater detail in later chapters. 6. Testing During the testing step, you test your installation of the Oracle Applications. You will create test scripts to automate the process and then compare the results produced with the results you expected. Inevitably, issues will come to light at this stage, so be sure to allow time in your schedule at this stage to resolve those issues. 7. Transition During the transition step, you will complete the following tasks:
  • Prepare end-user procedures and training
  • Set up help desk infrastructure
