Overview

If you have Oracle9i, you have the database to beat all databases. Besides being among the cream of the crop when it comes to relational database packages, Oracle9i is one of the more complex. Oracle9i does some amazingly fancy things, but the easy things are sometimes tricky.

Oracle9i For Dummies covers the tough stuff in a straightforward and conversational manner, touching on key points and new features. This friendly guide leads you through a complete tour of Oracle9i, hitting the highlights the object relational world and these important product components:

  • Enterprise Manager Console
  • Major DBA tools
  • SQL *Plus
  • XML Developer's Kit
  • Dataspeak
  • Java applets

If you're new to relationship databases, you're bound to appreciate the many examples of simple database designs in Oracle9i For Dummies. As you consider each example, you begin to get a feel for how relational databases are used to model real-world situations. The down-to-earth coverage includes

  • Getting to know the meat and potatoes of SQL
  • Befriending Schema Manager elements
  • Making the most of Oracle9i's built-in functions
  • Traveling back in time with Flashback Queries
  • Connecting relational tables with objects
  • Creating a role and assigning object privileges
  • Knowing why, what, when, and how to back up your data – and where to store it

The majority of the subject matter in this friendly – and believe it or not, fun – book applies to PCs, Macs, and mainframes and to all platforms from Windows to MacOS to UNIX. (Oracle9i's primary tools, Enterprise Manager and Console, have caught the Java wave and use the same mouse-driven screens no matter what operating system you’re using.) With Oracle9i For Dummies, you won't be able to use the "no experience" excuse when you face the task of building, using, or administering an Oracle database. This is the guide that packs in all you need to put Oracle9i to work – starting today!

Oracle 9i - Get Started Right Now

Every Oracle User regardless of his/her expertise level will agree with me when I say that it is difficult to find one single book on any Oracle version that provides comprehensive knowledge. Most of us need to open hundreds of pages to locate what we are looking for. However the exception for this is one book: ¿Oracle9i for Dummies¿ written by Carol McCullough-Dieter. Like Windows Explorer, this book will help you explore features of Oracle9i, and like GPS navigator, this book will take you to your destination with absolutely no mistake and no additional reading. If you are a supporter of Bill Gates, like me, then this book will help you to use the OEM GUI interface to understand Oracle9i. On the other hand, if you are using Sun, the traditional SQL*Plus commands included in the book will help you explore Oracle9i without a GUI interface. This one book will help both parties (Windows / Unix) to understand Oracle9i. If you are planning to become Oracle developer then the first three chapters will give you great confidence in understanding what SQL is. And if you have plans to become a DBA, simply one chapter (chapter 5) will give you jump-start. When you read Part IV on performance tuning, you may feel jealous that consultants like me are paid $75/hr for doing such a simple job. In reality, performance tuning is a very complex task but Carol has presented this in such a simple manner that one should think ¿Oracle Performance Tuning¿ is a piece of cake. If you have plans to use Oracle for e-business then Chapter 13 and Chapter 14 will help you to learn how Java and XML are linked with Oracle9i. After reading Chapter 18, you will be surprised to find how easy it is to launch the OEM Console in a web browser and you will be amazed to see literally hundreds of useful reports when you follow her simple steps to create/publish reports. In brief, whether you want to become an Oracle Developer, a DBA, or you want to use Oracle for e-business, this book should help you to get started within the shortest time frame and this book should help you to start your Oracle Career with a very solid foundation. It is really hard to consolidate everything into one small book (368 pages excluding glossary and index). However the author has proven her ability and competence to do this most difficult task.
