Overview

Oral Pathology as part of the Head and Neck Pathology is an interdisciplinary field of science. The oral mucosa and the saliva are reflectors of many systemic diseases of the organism and therefore valuable parameters of the diagnosis and prognosis of pathological processes. In the last years many new methods have been integrated in the diagnostic repertoire. Proliferation markers are of predicitive value and characterize the biological behavior of a tumor. Markers are such as oncogenes, growth factor receptors or genetic aberrations. The importance of these new markers shall be discussed concerning the different types of oral cancers and salivary gland tumours.

Editorial Reviews

3 Stars from Doody
Robert A. Goepp
This deceptively small, thin book deals with selected topics in oral pathology, mucosal diseases, and lymphomas. The book is described by the editor as a comprehensive review of the importance of new methods in the diagnosis and prognosis of lesions or diseases of the oral mucosa and several lymphomas found in the oral area. Subjects such as immunohistochemistry and development of laboratory genetic information are presented in detail. In addition to the editor there are 11 authors, each one addressing a specific subject in a separate chapter. The editor and the authors appear to be very well qualified in the area of their presentation and extensive references are provided for each chapter. There are many pages of references for each chapter and although the references are in smaller type without blank line spacing, the type is crisp and readable. This book would be of interest to practitioners who diagnose or treat these diseases. Because of the concise writing and extensive references, this book, with its extensive references, is most valuable for developing further information about the covered subjects. A researcher would find the information and references presented very helpful to their lines of inquiry. The text is excellent and the references are outstanding. The illustrations, almost all in black-and-white, are probably sufficient; they don't get in the way and they are not absolutely necessary. This is a unique and powerful book for advanced clinicians and researchers in oral medicine and oral pathology.
