Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara Carroll Roberts
The future world Tony Abbott has created in his "Time Surfers" series is a society in which kids rule, assuming all the big responsibilities for keeping things running smoothly—a world in which war is a nearly forgotten thing of the long, distant past. It is unfortunate then that Abbott has fallen back on the old standby good-guys-vs.-bad-guys plot line in this book. Sure, the bad guys are innovative—animated from the comic book trading cards in the main character's pocket—but they are still just bad guys threatening our youthful heroes. On top of that, the giant space station with its relentless tractor beam and the mysterious, helmeted leader of the bad guys seem rather derivative. Yet despite the stale plot, Abbott's engaging characters, snappy prose, and pervasive sense of fun will still draw in many young readers who have enjoyed other books in the series.
