I completed Organic Chemistry I and II with Maitland Jones himself while using his textbook. I must say, his book is written just the way he teaches, which is, by the way, excellent. I found the book to be a great reference. It has a nice variety of problems difficulty wise--some are simple drills, but many are challenging and thought provoking. His book has thorough explanations for not only the essential reactions, but also the research behind the concept. He interludes with footnotes referencing interesting points of view and jokes, keeping a rather dense subject somewhat fun and light hearted. His book gives a thorough view of the subject as a whole once completed, and incorporates physical chemistry that other references seem to ignore. It has great 3 dimensional drawings of molecules and reactions as well, making most all of them much easier to see and understand. There is, of course, a fair amount of synthesis to know, but learning the reagents is not as essential to MJ as learning the mechanisms and understanding WHY one reaction would happen over another thermodynamically and kinetically. After completing his class, reading his book, and doing just about every problem in it, I feel like I know Orgo better than any subject I've studied in the past. His book is one i won't be selling back :)
I would recommend getting his solutions manual as well. Its nice to have a thorough explanation for the tougher problems.

I just took organic chem with Jones' textbook. For the most part, the book does a good job explaining the concepts and introduces many interesting ideas. It's also well-organized, and contains practice problems that range from basic to ingenious so that you can practice and understand the concepts. However, some descriptions and explanations got a little long and difficult to follow - Jones sometimes goes on for pages about a relatively simple reaction, and it became really hard to keep track of what was going on. But other than that, I'm pretty satisfied with this textbook. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
