Editorial Reviews

Doherty (retired, literary theory, U. of Turku, Finland; author of ) explores the nature of D.H. Lawrence's fascination with systems of Eastern thought, particularly yoga and Buddhism, mapping the twists he gives them, the roles they play in his fiction, and the narrative needs they fulfill. Doherty notes that Lawrence looked to the East not so much for social, political, or cultural resolutions to the chronic problems of the West, but to engage with moments of radical transformation when the self "sheds its social accoutrements and discovers dynamic new ways of being-in-the-world." The designer's use of a particularly challenging serif typeface is unfortunate. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
