ORIENTATION TO COLLEGE LEARNING, THIRD EDITION, provides students with a solid foundation of learning skills and strategies that will help them succeed in college. This is the brief, non-workbook version of Van Blerkom's well-regarded COLLEGE STUDY SKILLS. The text is extensively class-tested, exhibiting the author's wide teaching experience and real understanding of students' needs. No other book does a better job of building on the student's previous school years of studying and prepares them for college courses that are more difficult, more intensive, and faster paced. By practicing learning strategies in real course material, like psychology, history, biology, sociology, students learn to modify and adapt the strategies to the lectures, texts, exams, and assignments for their other courses.

Editorial Reviews

Blerkom's (University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown) guide to college success offers a step-by-step approach to studying effectively and provides detailed explanations for the necessary skills. She describes a variety of strategies for each skill, and suggests practice activities for applying skills to course work. Advice is provided on goal setting, time management, note taking, improving concentration, communicating, reading, and preparing for and taking exams. This edition also includes new material on stress management, decision making, and problem solving. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
From the Publisher
"I have enjoyed success with this text. Others I have used were condescending and I find Van Blerkom's language and approach much more empowering and encourages student responsibility and opportunity."

"Its readability and practicality make the content accessible and appealing to a student population that is often difficult to reach."
