Overview

Johnny Cash was perhaps the most singular artist in the whole history of country music. His idiosyncratic approach wasn't honky tonk, wasn't Nashville, wasn't countrypolitan, and although he embraced what might be called traditional country values, what he recorded was far from traditional country. He also wasn't a rock & roll, gospel, folk, pop, or blues artist, although he exhibited affinities with all of these genres. Cash was simply a true American original, and it all started with the sides he recorded for Sam Phillips' Memphis-based Sun Records between 1955 and 1958, including the early Cash classics "Hey Porter," "Folsom Prison Blues," and "I Walk the Line." The best of Cash's Sun tracks were eventually collected on two LPs, Original Golden Hits, Vols. 1-2 (a third LP made up of odds and ends and miscellaneous cuts was also issued), and both of these have been combined here to make a single 22-track CD. All of Cash's essential Sun material is present, and what is revelatory is how fully formed he was as a performer from the very beginning. Cash recorded constantly during his long career and explored all manner of musical side roads, but he always managed to sound like the one and only Johnny Cash. This set shows that he was doing that from day one.
