Overview

Being different is never easy, especially when you're a vampire.

Ashlyn is far from normal. She was born a vampire, a trait that makes her utterly unique.

Knowing this, her family strived to keep her existence a secret. Tragedy forces her from

embraced, and yet still fears the supernatural is never a good place to stand out. Especially

when the one who notices you wants you dead. The only people who can save her want to use

her as well, but she's left with little choice. Ashlyn joins the FBI and becomes torn between two

worlds. She can either be a monster, or she can help destroy them.

Editorial Reviews

Kyra Dawson
This book opens in a way that made my toes curl with excitement, and will definitely leave you feeling a tad less secure in the seeming safety of our world from the entities that lurk in the ether. Hayden adds new lore to the vampire and supe mythos in a new and exciting way… Written with a refreshing humor…will have you laughing and then have you surprised and horrified in the next breath.
Jen Wylie
With wonderfully developed characters and a unique twist on vampires, this story is a must read for young and old, boy or girl. The main character Ashlyn Thorn pulls you into her life as she learns about herself; who she is, what she is. Her character grows, makes mistakes, and learns. The other characters, vampires, elves, weres fill the story with everything you need. Origins is a riveting story you don’t want to miss.

I’ve got to be honest, before ORIGINS I never considered reading a book about the “unhuman” world and I’m surprised I actually enjoyed it. I shouldn’t be surprised, really, because Sean is an excellent author. I’ve read a lot of off-the-cuff stories he’s written and they’re brilliantly funny. ORIGINS is no different. It’s immediately engaging, humorous, easy to read, witty and clever. You can’t help but root for Ashlyn.

I want to be Ashlyn :)

For those of you who have not read Origins, run to your nearest computer and get it. Ashlyn is one of the best female characters (although she is 17) I have encountered in the last five years. As most of the reviews mentioned, Ashlyn comes from an unique background for a vampire. She lived a sheltered life with her aunt and viewed the world through television and computers. After the death of her aunt, she ran fearfully into the real world, had a few missteps with the local vampires and then recruited by the FBI. I love the attitude Sean Hayden has imparted in Ashlyn. He allows her to be 17 during her training by having a crush on her trainer, having her show off to impress her instructors (did not work) and her apt description of her roommate (Werewolf, Were-Sloth and flat out witch). Ashlyn's attitude did not stop with her training peers she is more than happy to relinquish her euphemisms on her fellow FBI partners and superiors. (I love the fact she calls her partner meatstick) With that said, the humor alone makes Origins a fantastic book to read. Yet, Hayden takes to vampire lore grinds it up and remakes it into a fantastic journey, which you will not find anywhere else. It is bold, fresh and en excellent read. ( Now I am going to make a reservation at the Marion Suites ;) )

A New Breed of Vampire and a Whole Lot of "Supe" Action

As the title suggests, Origins, the first title in the Demonkin series written by Sean Hayden, lays down the foundation for this intriguing new paranormal mythos filled with supes of all kinds. Vampires are alive and well in Chicago - they are also out in the open and working in law enforcement. In Origins, author Sean Hayden introduces us to a new breed of vampire, making us question everything we think we know about them.

The beginning of this book opens in a way that made my toes curl with excitement, and will definitely leave you feeling a tad less secure in the seeming safety of our world from the entities that lurk in the ether. In Origins, Sean Hayden adds new lore to the vampire and supe mythos in a new and exciting way. This book is teeming with supernatural beings of all kinds and exposes us to a world where the supernatural is not only possible, but part of everyday, mainstream life.

Written with a refreshing humor, Origins will have you laughing and then have you surprised and horrified in the next breath. Origins will leave you wondering now that the foundations have been laid, where will Ashlyn go from here? Hopefully we won't have long to wait.

Fresh Take On The Vampire Tale

I didn't think there were any new twists left for vampire books. Much to my delight, Sean Hayden proved me wrong. He brings a fresh approach to the often tired vampire tale. The characters are unique and wonderfully entertaining. The plot is suspenseful with a touch of humor to lighten to mood. I found myself fully immersed in Ashlyn's world and I enjoyed every minute.

Takes Hold of You and Doesn't let go!

I thought that Origins was a WONDERFUL read. I devoured it in two sittings and this was even while reading it as a PDF (I highly dislike reading on the computer screen, so this bespeaks its quality even further). I was very impressed that this is Sean's first book and also thrilled that there would be more coming.

His character development was delightful and I loved following Ashlyn with both her triumphs and her subsequent humbling moments. She's an engaging character and I found myself wanting to know more about her and her past as the story went on. Sean has also crafted a wonderful world where vampires, werewolves, and mages coexist with 'normal people.' One of the best features of his vampires... is that they don't sparkle. ;)

However, anyone who has read Twilight and hungers for something with a little more substance... I highly recommend this book. Also, readers of Jim Butcher, Patricia Briggs, and C.E. Murphy will be happily rewarded by delving into this book. Keep an eye on Sean Hayden. He thought he could write better than much of the slush making it to print... and he was right.

    Origins, one Kick Ass Story

Origins is a fast paced, interesting and different take on a world where vampires and werewolves are out in the open.

The main character is young, and inexperienced, but she manages to step up and kick some ass. She screws up a few times, but ultimately the good guys win and she discovers a lot about herself in the process.

I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys fast paced, well told stories. I also highly recommend it to anyone who likes Urban Fantasy and Young Adult :)

    Vampires and wereanimals oh my!

    Book Title: Origins
    Author: Sean Hayden
    Publisher: Echelon Press Publishing
    ISBN: 9781590806821
Reviewed by Michele Tater for The Couch Tater Review

Being a normal teenage is hard enough, but being Ashlyn is even more complicated. She lost her mother giving birth to her, and she does not even know her father. Given that she knows no other relatives she lives with her aunt, which seems normal right? But not only has her aunt cared for Ashlyn but she also lets Ashlyn feed off her blood every other day. Instead of nails Ashlyn has claws and her pupils of her eyed are slit like a cat. With all these differences, her aunt felt it better for her to be isolated from the real world. Television and the Internet were her only sources of what the outside was like, although she would sneak out at night to walk. She is unable to go into the daylight since the sun hurts her eyes and she would get a nasty sunburn too.

Like most good things, this situation had to come to an unfortunate end. Ashlyn's aunt has a car accident which leaves her little choice but to leave since there are not records of her even being alive. "Origins" is a tale of what happens to Ashlyn when she is face with a world that she knows less about than she had thought. She is given an opportunity she really can not refuse and one that will change her life forever, either in a good or bad way, she is not sure. Now grant you this story takes place where the world is full of vampires, and several types of them, and also wereanimals. These creatures are a "normal" sight throughout the city of Chicago where Ashlyn has lived. The author, Sean Hayden's lets you into a place of fantasy set in the modern time era. His main character, Ashlyn pulls at your heart strings as she figures out her place in this strange place.

Don't let the fact that this is Sean Hayden's first book steer you away from "Origins"; his writing comes across as a seasoned writer. It may seem to be more geared to be a young adult book being that Ashlyn is only seventeen years old, I find that even an older adult like me enjoyed it. I highly recommend this read to lovers of vampires and other supernatural figures. It has action, blood, gore and so much more, that you will be asking for even more. Thank goodness he already has a second book in the works.

Origins is a riveting story you don't want to miss.

Origins is one of those books you don't want to put down. I've read it more than once, and love it more each time. Sean Hayden has a knack for drawing you in and keeping the action going.

With wonderfully developed characters and a unique twist on vampires this story is a must read for young and old, boy or girl. The main character Ashlyn Thorn pulls you into her life as she learns about herself; who she is, what she is. Her character grows, makes mistakes and learns. The other characters, vampires, elves, weres fill the story with everything you need. I can't decide which is my favorite and look forward to seeing more of them all. Origins is a riveting story you don't want to miss.
