One of the memorable series of Atlantic recordings that Ornette Coleman produced in the early '60s, Ornette, recorded in 1961, both continues the free-jazz explorations that marked his earlier albums and significantly extends them. First off, the tracks are longer. Three of the four original album tracks are nine minutes or more, giving Coleman and his band plenty of room to stretch out in a manner that would soon become de rigueur for modern jazz improvisers. (A bonus CD track, “Proof Readers,” is also a little over ten minutes long.) Coleman’s extended solo on “R.P.D.D.” is a marvelous example of his ability to spin spontaneous thematic variations.
