    An Excellent Textbook!

I read this book for my university level ornithology class and found it extremely useful and clear in explaining all the details I needed to know about birds. Throughout the book, scientific case studies are used to demonstrate a variety of points and provide interest. Even though I was a student reading through this, I could easily see how a teacher could organize a class around this book. The book is organized into 6 parts.

Part 1-Origins, gives you basic information, history, diversity and systematics. Part 2- Form and Function, is broken down into three parts based on feathers, flight, and physiology. Part 3- Behavior and Communication, is centered on senses, the brain, vocalizations and intelligence (while giving excellent case studies). Part 4- Behavior and the Environment, continues talking about bird behavior, focusing on cycles, migration, navigation, and social behavior. Part 5- Avian Life Histories, talks about: mates, breeding systems, bird sex, nests and incubation, parents and offspring, and reproductive success. Part 6- Population Dynamics and Conservation, deals with: populations, species, communities, and conservation.
