The Public Needs to Read This

This is a moving account of what happened during the largest animal rescue in our history. The people who participated already know, but the American public needs to understand what we learned there.

ORPHANS OF KATRINA IS COMPELLING READING

Millions of Americans watched as the horror of post-Katrina and its treatment of people and its pets unfolded, and wanted to come and help, but for various reasons, didn't. Karen O'Toole has the rare gift of translating her experiences into vivid words that transport you to those mean, bleak streets of New Orleans and the plight of the pets left behind. Her words paint unforgettable pictures of the hardships, triumphs and tragedies of people and pets alike. She addresses the questions of "Why?" are you there, and "Are you crazy?, that were asked of so many rescuers like herself. Her use of the stories of individual pets, pet owners and rescuers makes it both personal and poignant, and even though it is heart-wrenching it is also inspiring and uplifting, because it speaks to the strength, courage, and tenacity of both pets and people, and the love and loyalty that binds them. Throughout the book she also addresses root causes and solutions to some of the problems that created the Katrina Orphans, and the continued inhumanity of our society toward animals. As a passionate animal and people lover, I heartily recommend this book to all people, animal lovers or not. This is one scenario we must never forget!
