Overview

The most comprehensive text for the core orthopaedics course required in all physical therapy programs! Includes all of the necessary information to provide a high level of care to patients with any musculoskeletal dysfunction by integrating anatomy and biomechanics with treatment strategies. Features case studies, extensive illustrations, and guidelines from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), which are integrated throughout.

Mark Dutton, PT is a physical therapist with Allegheny General Hospital, West Penn Health System (WPAHS). He is also an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Christopher James Hughes, PT,PhD,OCS,CSCS(Slippery Rock University)
Description: This book epitomizes a truly comprehensive approach to the examination and treatment of orthopedic injuries. Emphasis has been placed on creating a single resource for the clinician actively engaged in orthopedic care.
Purpose: The author has strived to compile a single reference that not only covers orthopedic examination techniques but also presents an eclectic approach to intervention. As the author mentions in the preface, very few books discuss both areas with equal dedication. Although this is a lofty objective, the author has met his goal in creating a single source for this area of clinical practice.
Audience: The information presented in this book will suit a wide variety of audiences. The breadth of coverage and accompanying online Web based resources make it an ideal classroom text for students in physical therapy and sports medicine. In addition, the book can easily serve as an excellent evidence-based reference for practicing clinicians who treat patients with orthopedic problems. The author is a licensed physical therapist with academic ties to the University of Pittsburgh School of Health-Related Professions.
Features: The book is organized into four major sections, fundamentals of orthopedics, upper extremity and lower extremity, spine and pelvis, and postsurgical rehabilitation of the extremities. Each section covers a large amount of material but is organized very well with clear objectives included in the beginning of each chapter. Basic science knowledge is integrated with clinical procedures to provide an evidence-based approach to practice. Tables, illustrations, figures, and bulleted text are used extensively throughout to enforce concepts and improve retention. Highlight boxes or "clinical pearls" along with case studies detailing a structured intervention strategy guide the reader in applying the information. The resources found on the companion website (i.e. PowerPoint presentations, video clips, etc.) are an added bonus for students and instructors alike.
Assessment: Many books have been written in the area of orthopedic evaluation and assessment but very few blend knowledge of the clinical exam with detailed coverage of exercise and manual intervention techniques. This book is one of the first to reference both of these areas of clinical practice equally well. In addition, the vast resources available for readers on the companion Web site complete a body of work that I feel will be a standard in the field of orthopedic clinical practice. I highly recommend this book.
