Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD(University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This pocket guide is designed to be a quick reference for third and fourth year medical students and interns while on the wards or in clinic faced with challenges of musculoskeletal medicine. Sections are based on anatomy and the top of each page is labeled with the anatomic region making it quite easy to thumb through and find a part of the body efficiently.
Purpose: The purpose clearly is to provide physicians in training a quick reference they can toss into their lab coats. It uses a format of tables and bullet points rather than paragraphs of text. It clearly can stand alone as a quick reference or accompany a more in-depth pocket manual. However, the sports medicine in the title is a bit misleading as there is little specific commentary on athletes or sports-related injury. It could just as easily be called musculoskeletal medicine or simply orthopedics.
Audience: The authors clearly envision this book in the lab coat pockets of third or fourth year medical students or primary care interns. This is a reasonable goal. If all my students snuck a peak at this book before answering my challenges on rounds, I likely would be impressed by their responses. This is good, cost-effective pocket reference for this selected group. Admittedly, it does not have the depth expected for a musculoskeletal specialist or orthopedic resident. The author is a family medicine physician who completed a fellowship at the prestigious University of Pittsburgh program and currently is an adjunct assistant professor there.
Features: The bullet-point organization and anatomic-based sections make this a simple and straightforward guide to navigate. The more I flipped through, the more I liked how quickly I could double check information on clinical findings or examination pearls of the musculoskeletal system.
Assessment: This guide accomplishes what it set out to do for the unique population it targets. It will be valued by every medical student on a musculoskeletal rotation and will quickly become dog-eared from use. Fortunately, the price makes it easy to replace. I would encourage medical students to look at this book when they take the orthopedics rotation.
