Overview

Orthotics: A Comprehensive Interactive Tutorial provides a dynamic presentation of orthotic management for patients with lower-limb, spinal, cervical, and upper-limb disorders. This user-friendly CD-ROM utilizes an interactive format to exhibit a wide range of orthoses in use and on display. Jan Bruckner, PhD, PT and Joan E. Edelstein, MA, PT, FISPO present a library of lower-limb, spinal, cervical, and upper-limb orthoses, evaluations of orthoses on and off patients, six case studies, and a self-assessment quiz written in the format of the physical therapy licensure examination. Componentry is demonstrated as well as multiple aspects of the appliances and donning procedures. The co-authors of the best-selling book, Orthotics: A Comprehensive Clinical Approach, also include the ways that orthotic interventions impact the rehabilitation process. Editorial Reviews

From The Critics
Reviewer: Curtis C Kindel, B.S, MPT (St. Francis University)
Description: This interactive tutorial functions to provide knowledge of orthotics and their relationship to specific disorders. The tutorial utilizes video, sound, and other technology to assist the learner in efficiently navigating the educational information provided.
Purpose: The purpose of presenting the material in this manner is to provide an efficient method for learners to gain information on orthotics. The presentation is very clear. It helps to make the information interesting and appealing. The product is a necessary component to education because it provides an easy learning tool to self-directed students/learners.
Audience: This product is intended for students or any practitioner interested in enhancing their knowledge on the subject of orthotics. I feel the product meets the needs of its intended audience to an adequate degree. It provides a basis of orthotics that students/practitioners can further research if they so desire. The authors are credible authorities in the subject matter.
Features: The product provides short descriptions of various orthotics and the complications they compensate for. It provides both text and video with sound to enhance the reader's learning experience. In addition to specific orthoses, the tutorial provides case studies and evaluation procedures for upper and lower limb orthotics. The product has very easy installation procedures. The tutorial navigates through the table of contents very quickly. The audio and video components provide a variety of learning styles to accommodate different audiences. A highlight of this tutorial is the video component. It demonstrates how to use the device and what its appearance is. It also shows donning and doffing of some devices and how it affects gait. A shortcoming of the tutorial is the lack of all orthotic devices that are contained in the textbook. This shortcoming limits the scope of the numerous orthotics available to healthcare professionals.
Assessment: I feel this interactive tutorial is a great addition to the textbook by the same authors. It facilitates learning by providing video of specific devices and their effect on movement. I was impressed with the ease of navigation through the tutorial. It allowed efficient time management with a sequential table of contents. The format significantly adds to the information because it provides more than simple text.
