Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sylvia Firth
Young children are the intended audience for this new title in the "Start with Science" series. Oscar is a kitten who is very inquisitive about the world around him. When he discovers a tractor, he promptly hops on to see what this strange thing is all about. Somehow, he turns on the switch for the windshield wipers and of course, he is curious. A nearby bird joins him on the tractor and explains that electricity makes the wipers move. Since Oscar does not know what electricity is, Bird describes how the tractor's battery makes electricity. She also reveals how batteries power many other types of machines, how generators produce electricity, that lightning is also a kind of electricity and that wind turbines are yet another means of making electricity. The last two pages summarize all the information presented in the book. The digitally-created illustrations combine both soft and bright colors. Oscar, with his huge eyes, and the other objects are simply drawn so that youngsters will easily identify them. This is a good title to put in collections in need of science material for young children. Reviewer: Sylvia Firth
