Overview

Oscar Niemeyer is one of the greatest architects of our time. Hugely influential, his work has added a new dimension to modern architecture in the twentieth century. The designer of Brasilia showed that the rhythmic, sensuous lines of Brazilian Modernism were as legitimately modern as the rectilinear lines of the Bauhaus. Oscar Niemeyer Houses showcases the houses built by this seminal modern master in a lavish format that finally does justice to his extraordinary work. Viewed as a collection, these houses serve to demonstrate the wide range of Niemeyer's prodigious genius. The designs show a personal and eclectic facet to Niemeyer's creative imagination, a side of the master little known and under-appreciated. Often built for family members or major clients, they show a wealth of solutions that respond to a wide range of sites: the steep hillsides of Rio, the Atlantic beach shore, the rain forest, and the residential neighborhoods of Rio and Sao Paulo. This celebrated work stands as an enduring and notable tribute to one of the last of the international masters of Modernism.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This sumptuous book surveys Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer's domestic architecture from the 1930s to the present. Weintraub's (The Architecture of John Lautner) color photographs capture the rich colors and sensual architectural forms in the strong tropical light of the architect's native country (there are a total of 150 color and 50 black-and-white images). Many of the houses were built for friends and family and show an intimacy and personal aspect that one does not usually associate with the Modernism of the Bauhaus. Although Niemeyer has been part of the history of Modernism since early in his career, the geographic isolation and distance of Brazil have limited the direct experience of his work. The present book gives a very strong selection of images along with a modest but thoughtful amount of critical analysis by architect and critic Hess (Viva Las Vegas: After-Hours Architecture). It makes you want to see the buildings. Recommended for all architecture collections.-Jack Perry Brown, Art Inst. of Chicago Libs. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
