Oscar Peterson Plays My Fair Lady & The Music from Fiorello!by Oscar Peterson Trio
This 1994 CD reissue combines two previously released LPs on which the Oscar Peterson Trio essayed the music of Broadway musicals. Peterson began playing "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" with the same wistful tone that the stage version had, then abruptly went into a much livelier style, as if to assert his improvisational prerogative. He didn't look back from there, taking, for example, the driving "Show Me" and turning it into a slow ballad. Since the Fiorello! songs have turned out to be less memorable than those from My Fair Lady, Peterson's interpretations seem even more radical, though it may simply be that, since they are melodically less compelling, the jazz musicians felt the need to impose more of their own ideas. In both cases, it is possible to enjoy the music afresh.
