Description: This is the second edition of a handbook that contains all the essential information needed by "practitioners and students of medicine" caring for hospitalized patients. This edition incorporates many changes including addition of critical care, comparative drug tables, transfusion medicine, PDA chapters on organ transplantation, and other topics of interest.
Purpose: This handbook is intended to provide quick access at the point of care to the essentials of diagnosis and treatment and evidence-based medicine.
Audience: The authors' goal is to target practitioners and students of medicine. Each chapter was written by a member of the Osler housestaff at Johns Hopkins with direct supervision of a member of the faculty.
Features: Chapters begin with a table of fast facts, followed by epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment/management, and references. There are many helpful tables and algorithms.
Assessment: This handbook is well organized and readable. It contains all the information frequently needed in the care of hospitalized patients. Familiarity with the information presented here represents a desirable fund of knowledge.
