Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Sally Ling, M.D.;FACP(University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine)
Description: This is the second edition of a handbook that contains all the essential information needed by "practitioners and students of medicine" caring for hospitalized patients. This edition incorporates many changes including addition of critical care, comparative drug tables, transfusion medicine, PDA chapters on organ transplantation, and other topics of interest.
Purpose: This handbook is intended to provide quick access at the point of care to the essentials of diagnosis and treatment and evidence-based medicine.
Audience: The authors' goal is to target practitioners and students of medicine. Each chapter was written by a member of the Osler housestaff at Johns Hopkins with direct supervision of a member of the faculty.
Features: Chapters begin with a table of fast facts, followed by epidemiology, clinical presentation, treatment/management, and references. There are many helpful tables and algorithms.
Assessment: This handbook is well organized and readable. It contains all the information frequently needed in the care of hospitalized patients. Familiarity with the information presented here represents a desirable fund of knowledge.
From the Publisher
"Basically, a medical text is deemed worthy of widespread use when it is able to convey cutting-edge data in a clear and cogent manner. And that's just what the authors and editors of Osler's have done with this manual — buidling an in-office reference that outlines the most common diseases and disordered the clinician is likely to encounter in daily practice. As Osler's infers with its carefully ordered analysis of human health, the best doctors know that no case is routine and that no diagnosis is easy. To the contrary, sound patient care takes dedication and a mastering of the fundamentals of the scientific process, this never-ending process of testing and assessment that allows the clinician to alleviate patient suffering. In accordance with this sacred mission, The Osler Medical Handbook is an artful resource with long-lasting value. - The Electric Review, May-June 2006

    Spectacular reference handbook

From a medical student perspective, this book is invaluable. In an organized fashion, it presents the key information for a vast array of scenarios encountered on Internal Medicine. Although not exhaustive the way a full textbook can be, it covers essentially every major condition encountered on internal medicine, including relatively obscure diagnoses, save those that are unmentionably rare. The chapters present differential diagnoses, etiology, work-up and clinical management. The writing is focused and concise but extremely clear. I would highly recommend for students, residents, and practitioners as a convenient, thorough, and up-to-date clinical guide.

    The BEST medicine pocket book

In my opinion (as a senior medicine resident), the Osler Medical Handbook is the best internal medicine pocket book. It is an up-to-date, evidence based practical guidebook to the most common (and some uncommon) diseases encountered in internal medicine. It gives a thorough differential diagnosis, and appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic options. From what I understand, it is the ONLY strictly evidence-based pocketbook - many of the others do not use the most recent literature. The second edition is great - it is slimmer and even fits into my pocket. A must for everyone in medicine who wants the most current recommendations on patient care, from the third-year medical student to the attending level.
