Overview

Someone has stolen the witch of Crookhaven's horse, and there will be no peace in the village until it is returned. So bold, brassy Kate O'Sullivan takes matters into her own hands. But instead of saving the day, she manages to land herself-and her family-in trouble with the king. So Kate sets out to save their hides the only way she knows how-with a good story. Filled with imagination, wit, and a healthy helping of good old-fashioned Irish blarney, this is a hilarious tale that will keep readers coming back for more.

When the witch of Crookhaven, a village on the zigzagging coast of Ireland, has her horse stolen by the King and strikes back with famine and disaster, Kate decides to save the day by getting the horse back for her.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
A feisty Irish girl sets out to save her village from starvation. "Visually and verbally inventive in its details and its broader storytelling, this one is a shiny shamrock," said PW. Ages 4-8. (Jan.) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
From The Critics
Katie O'Sullivan's storytelling ability is the only thing that can save her family from the hangman's rope after they are caught trying to rescue the local witch's favorite horse from the king's stable. Kate make a deal with the king for him to let them go free if she can show, through her stories, that they were in a worse spot in the story than they are right now. He agrees. The stories are rich with the ingredients of Irish tales: magical fairy folk, leprechauns, sea serpents, caterwauling cats, one-eyed giants and a baby who is rescued by Kate's father. One guess who that baby turned out to be. Talbott's artwork is as buoyant and dazzling as his storytelling. This is a great read-aloud. Don't miss it!
