Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This entry in the "Smithsonian's Backyard" series presents in story format what happens when a young bullfrog is ready to mate and finds a calling spot in the bayou from which to "brrwoom." Like others in the series, this one differentiates the various aspects of an animal, in this case, sticky tongue, bulging eyes that serve several purposes, a bulging throat, and a territory seeker. Mild danger in the form of a black-crowned heron predator is avoided when a crashing raccoon scares the bird off and the frog hops off to search for and find a special place from which to attract a mate. Suitable as a source for reports, the book also features backmatter with more information, a glossary, and an index. Kest's paintings are inviting and share well with groups. The book is also available as an audiobook accompanied by a realistic stuffed animal. 2002, Soundprints,

K-Gr 2-Bobbing in a ribbon of kelp, diving for his dinner, and watching a shark attack his mother are all part of growing up for Otter Pup. In this revision of a 1995 title (Soundprints), Boyle's almost poetic text and content remain mostly unchanged, with the exception of a few sentences that were rewritten to read more smoothly. The illustrations are by a different illustrator, and have a softer look. Lawson's colors immediately draw readers into Otter Pup's world, from the time he is two hours old to adulthood, and the details, from the gleam in the sea otters' eyes to background items such as a lighthouse, nicely complement the text. Every picture fills the entire spread, leaving no white space. Words appear on a lightly colored background. Otter is a wonderful blend of factual information and delightful story that combines drama and adventure. A glossary and two sections at the end of the book provide more information about this animal.-Cathie Bashaw Morton, Somers Library, NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

K-Gr 3-Cradled by golden brown ribbons of kelp, a newborn sea otter rests cozily on his mother's chest. She blows warm air into his fur to keep him warm and dry. After several months of sharing her meals of clams, abalone, and urchins, the pup has grown sleek and strong enough to start diving on his own. Big, bold, closeup illustrations of the creatures and their fascinating habitat are both attractive and informative. This highly visible book is ideal for group use. Bright pictures and clear language will quickly draw children into the world of this charming and playful animal as he follows his mother out of their sheltered cove and into the open sea. As he learns to survive on his own in the Pacific Ocean, young readers will come to love and appreciate him, his environment, and nature in general.-Lisa Wu Stowe, Great Neck Library, NY
