Overview

Forty-four men have taken up the responsibilities of the Presidency as the nation has grown from its colonial infancy into a modern superpower. They've faithfully executed the duties of the President—waged war, signed treaties, addressed Congress, and established government offices. But their impact goes far beyond the bounds of their job description.

Each President has left his mark on the history of the United States and on the lives of the American people.

Our Country's Presidents is packed with information about America's leaders. Find out why George Washington gave up his life as a Virginia planter to lead a nation, and why John Tyler was nicknamed "His Accidency." Walk with the Presidents through wars, depressions, civil rights movements, and the race for space. Romp with the Garfield kids in a White House pillow fight and mourn with the nation over John F. Kennedy's assassination.

Eight all-new pages will contain exciting information and new images, and, of course, Election 2012, and a brand-new profile and photographic portrait of the new President (if applicable). In-depth text and historic images combine to make this volume the definitive family reference guide to the fascinating lives of the Presidents of the United States.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5–9—Children will find this beautifully illustrated resource both eye-catching and informative. The presidents' stories, presented in chronological order, include stunning full-page replicas of official portraits, a fact box of important historical details during the presidency, additional prints-both color and black and white, diagrams, etc. The conversational text is clearly written and full of interesting facts about the men's personal lives, humorous incidents, political backgrounds, records, struggles, battles, successes, what they are most famous for, events that occurred during their administrations, and memorable quotes. Interspersed throughout are spreads that provide additional information on the executive branch of government, White House traditions such as the Easter egg roll, the first ladies, Christmas tree lighting, the vice-presidency, voting rights, campaign strategies and party politics, conventions, etc. Great for reports or personal interest, this resource will fill the bill for students, and please them as well. A chart of presidential election results from 1789 to the present, a detailed index, resource guide with web and book materials, and an extensive bibliography complete the volume.—Susan Shaver, Hemingford Public Schools, NE
School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-This attractive volume, originally published in 2001, has been revised and expanded to include the 2004 election. Sixteen pages of new material include sidebar spreads on the role of vice presidents, information on the Electoral College, past presidents as elder statesmen, presidential security, and the expanding global role of the president. The short profiles provide essential information for report writers. The book includes an appended chart of election results from George Washington through George W. Bush's second term, and information on America's changing role in the world, the White House, military conflicts throughout our history, political parties and campaigns, and important historical events of the time. The beautiful illustrations (including full-page reproductions of the official presidential portraits), current information, and user-friendly layout make this title a solid addition for most libraries.-Karen Sutherland, Bartlett Public Library, IL Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
