Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
New prayers, prayers from the Psalms, Mother Teresa, and St. Francis are shared, along with an Irish blessing and a Gaelic blessing. The prayers appear under headings such as: "Love," "Forgiveness," "Thanks," "Morning Prayers" and "Sadness." The text is surrounded by the soft pictures of children enjoying the outdoors. Children pick tomatoes, ride bicycles, walk among sheep, and see a sunset. In a two-page spread under the heading, "Praise," a boy and girl see a waterfall, deer, and birds along with the prayers: "All things bright and beautiful" by Cecil Frances Alexander, Psalm 115:1, and "Let us with a gladsome mind" by John Milton. The Lord's Prayer is from the Common Worship Services and Prayers for the Church of England. The Lord's Prayer ends: "For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen." It is stated that this is "An ancient ending for the prayer." Bible extracts are taken from the Good News Bible and the NIV version. An index of first lines is included. The slick, padded cover shows Jesus walking with children in a field with sheep. Children will enjoy the pictures while learning prayers. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
Kirkus Reviews
This thematically arranged collection of 29 Christian prayers, first published in Great Britain, includes many traditional prayers that parents or Sunday School teachers might select to use for religious education. The collection begins with the Lord's Prayer, entitled within the text as, "The Prayer that Jesus Taught." The version used as the text is from the Church of England, which differs slightly but noticeably from the most common versions used in U.S. churches. Other well-known prayers include the 23rd Psalm, "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" and the prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. A short prayer by Mother Teresa and Irish and Gaelic blessings provide some geographical variety, but there is no representation of Christian cultures in other parts of the world, including North or South America. Additional prayers are interpretations of Bible verses or short, original poems by the author. Pleasant, softly shaded illustrations in watercolor and pencil show children of different age groups and races interacting with their families and, in two illustrations, with Jesus and his flock of sheep. (index of first lines) (Picture book/religion. 3-6)
