Overview

Alexandra and Jenny have been best friends for a long time. But when Alexandra is momentarily dazzled by the glamour of a new girl at school, she's willing to do almost anything to get to be the cool girl's friend. Ultimately, she tells Jenny's biggest, most important secrets and just like that, Alexandra is in! But when Alexandra realizes what it feels like to lose her best friend, and sees the hurt she's caused, she knows she has to figure out a way to regain the relationship that's far more important to her than being invited to sit with the popular girls. Our Friendship Rules is both a lyrical story of forgiveness and a simple, sweet but instructive tale of how to get along.

Editorial Reviews

Multicultural Review
Peopled with a multi-ethnic cast of vividly illustrated characters, this charming book will appeal to its intended audience of girls.... Geis's pictures are beautiful and a perfect complement to the text....
Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Together, best friends Alexandra and Jenny craft some important rules about friendship, like not making a puppet out of your friend's favorite shirt. But when new, super-cool Rolinda shows up, Alexandra promptly forgets the rules in her desperate attempt to win Rolinda's admiration. Alexandra's desire for approval leads her to dress like Rolinda, cut her hair, and snub Jenny. The supreme betrayal occurs when Alexandra shares Jenny's "biggest, most private" secret with Rolinda. Eventually, Alexandra recognizes the pain she's caused her best friend. The two friends reconcile and create a new set of "friendship rules," which include the essential principle to "be yourself." Alexandra's voice in this first-person narrative is strengthened by the addition of entries from her scrapbook, which are shown alongside flat, bright-colored illustrations. The journal magnifies both girls' characters, including such items as a cursive list of their original friendship rules and a pencil drawing of a distraught Jenny. The scrapbook feel makes the story more appealing to preteen girls who would likely turn away from a traditional picture book. This book lends nicely to discussions about friendship and belonging, both significant themes for preteen girls.
