Overview

Living Era presents a nostalgic anthology of vintage recordings by Gracie Fields, England's beloved soprano, comedienne and star of stage and screen. Exploring her discography with records cut between 1928 and 1947, this compilation covers more ground than Living Era's sequel Gracie Fields tribute album That Old Feeling. Included here are several examples of her uncanny artistry as a lyric soprano; "My Blue Heaven," "One More Chance," Rudolf Friml's "Donkey Serenade" and Franz Schubert's "Ave Maria" are lovely and intoxicating performances. Fields' campy comedic self runs rampant with invigorating songs like "Sing As We Go," "I Took My Harp to a Party," "In My Little Bottom Drawer," "What Can You Give a Nudist on His Birthday?" and "The Biggest Aspidistra in the World." Yet Gracie Fields might be said to have attained the apex of her comedic career with her rendition of "Singin' in the Bathtub," a song also associated with the Lombardo Brothers, King Bennie Nawahi and R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders.
