Our Love

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 6-8 A young adult romance with a message. Unfortunately, the message is too obvious and the romance too forced. Sue Belkowski, a reporter for her high-school newspaper, is assigned to do a feature on the Vietnamese students attending the school. She immediately (and unconvincingly) falls for Daniel Luu, the student whom she interviews. Since readers will never really become involved in (or believe in) their ``relationship,'' Sue's trials and tribulations (her father feels that she should date someone with a similar background) are not moving. The romance seems contrived only so that Brown can make it clear that we would all get along better if we took the time to understand different cultures. It is a pity that the message overpowers the story, since several of the secondary characters are rather interesting. As is, however, Our Love isn't even likable.
