Best Photography Book on New Jersey Ever!

What could a photographer born and raised in spectacular, sprawling Canada possibly find of interest in tiny, crowded, much-maligned New Jersey? The answer, if that photographer has the artistic sensibility of Steve Greer, is simple: Everything.

As I turned the pages of this magnificent book, I was repeatedly enthralled by the landscapes, seascapes, animals, and people of my home state -- such startling diversity within so narrow a geographic area. From High Point State Park to Cape May and in all the seasons of the year, Steve and his camera have captured a New Jersey that most people -- including those of us who live here -- have never fully observed or appreciated.

And he has accomplished this with his signature technique of "sculpting with light." This approach is emblematic of the man and his method: Steve really is that photographer who gets up in pitch blackness and slogs through swamps in frigid temperatures in order to catch the sun's first rays filtering through the trees. And he knows exactly where to stand to get that shot because he has already researched the location, traveled to the area numerous times, and studied the lighting under various weather conditions. He plans these images with meticulous care. But he also possesses the innate ability to recognize a photographic moment as it evolves around him, and to reach out and grab it.

Steve is regarded as one of the world's finest nature photographers, and the images in this volume show us why. The fawn barely visible through a curtain of ferns, the horseshoe crabs shimmering on the shore, the owl emerging at dusk from its arboreal home -- all reveal a photographer remarkably attuned to the rhythms of nature. But equally compelling are his images of people. The inhabitants of the most populous state in the nation are portrayed here with their quirky diversity intact, from the bull rider atop a plunging Brahma at the Cowtown Rodeo to the kids face-deep in blueberry pie at the Burlington County fair.

But don't just look at the pictures! Steve is an artist with the pen as well. For once, a photographic book has words that match its images for beauty and thoughtful eloquence.

This book is, quite simply, a treasure. And you don't have to be from New Jersey to enjoy it. Give it to a friend, or allow it to become a permanent resident of your personal library. You will want to take it down from the shelf, settle yourself in a comfortable chair, and savor these exquisite images over and over again.

"Our New Jersey" as seen through the camera lens of Steve Greer is an awesome pictorial of the state my wife and I have always lived in. We greatly appreciate his view of New Jersey.

Having spent my entire life in New Jersey, I've taken the time to experience many of it's natural wonders. But, since having spent many days with Steve, I have found I needed to look deeper into what I see. Steve's ability to photograph is at the top of my list. His camera sees more than I have ever seen. His personality sees more than mundane life, instead he sees everything as an adventure in living, which is his art and with his camera, he brings it to all of us. This well captioned, pictorial view of New Jersey has already been a conversation piece for everyone I've shared it with. It has something for everyone, no matter where their interests may be and will be one a the best gifts my wife and I can give to friends and family.
Steve Greer's view of "Our New Jersey" has taken my view of life to a new height, for he not only shows me what I've seen, He shows me what I've missed.

Paul Totten

Wow, what a beautiful and stunning tribute to unappreciated New Jersey!

Beautiful and interesting is this gorgeous volume with fascinating writing to boot! I found myself going over and over each section with a renewed interest in planning day trips out and about the state I have lived in all my life. Five stars to Steve Greer for his keen and artistic brilliance behind the camera lens. This book has claimed a permanent place on my coffee table as well as becoming a number one Christmas gift for many friends and family. What a treasure!

New Jersey, the Garden State Images

This is a wonderful, comprehensive, inspirational book of my beloved home state of New Jersey. I now reside in Stuart, Florida, along with many other Garden State transplants, and when I started circulating my copy of the book to all of them.....Mr. Greer has been busy ever since, mailing additional copies everywhere. It is a great Christmas/Holiday gift-giving book. Steve has dedicated many years in gathering the beautiful images of New Jersey, from the top of its mountains to its many shores. He hasn't missed a thing, the flower/fauna, wildlife, people, especially the children and natural beauty found in the State, is captured magnificantly, and you will read and re-read this publication. I also purchased the annual calendar that Steve issues, and make sure you purchase that along with the book...Congratulations! Steve on another work of art so beautifully and well done. Penny
