Overview

When Mrs. Neal tells her first grade class that she's going to have a baby, the children are surprised. Only mothers have babies! "Teachers can be mothers too," Mrs. Neal reminds them.

As the weeks pass, Samantha, Mike, Polly, and the rest of the class get excited about the baby. They write letters to it, think up possible names, and design a baby room on the bulletin board. Then one day Mrs. Neal stops coming to school, and the principal tells them that she's had a baby girl. The first graders are happy, but then they begin to worry. What if their teacher never comes back?

Warmly illustrated by Diane de Groat, this new story by Eve Bunting explores children's fascination with babies in a fresh and sympathetic way.

Editorial Reviews

Kathryn Broderick
Mrs. Neal informs her students that she's going to have a baby. They take the news well but have lots of questions, all of which are legitimate. And Mrs. Neal proves to be a responsible teacher, answering their questions and involving the children in her situation. Through the fall and winter, this multicultural class works on projects relating to the approaching birth--deciding what to name the baby, writing letters of welcome, pinning up pictures of baby's things on the bulletin board. Bunting's story is realistic and accurate, while de Groat's beautiful watercolor spreads show much of the emotion that seven-year-olds can feel, from the excitement at hearing the news to the fear of not seeing their teacher again. Overall, this book provides great feelings of reassurance, which children need during times of change.
