Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
This book, "dedicated to the children of the world," covers each continent and its respective countries. Each page contains colored pencil drawings with brief. For each continent and country, there is a graph that describes the area, population, language, government, and currency. The larger countries receive at least two pages and sometimes four, which show the various aspects of the country's culture and climate. Some of the choices appear somewhat dated; for the United States it shows a car and states that "cars are manufactured in Detroit, Michigan." While some cars are manufactured in Michigan, most of them are not. Perhaps these choices are designed to appeal to a younger or less experienced audience; however, the small drawings and small text might be hard for these audiences to see. Much information is covered in the colorful 102 pages—outlines of each country, some history, some science and flags. Nevertheless, one wonders if similar information could be covered in a better format and teach some awareness about the difficulties that some of these countries face. This would be suitable for young elementary students wanting to get some exposure to a colorful atlas.
